a move like this will effectively not only kill freeware, open source, and the like, it will ALSO kill the internet as many servers run Linux or some other form of Unix!

If they go through with this, I can see a 100% gain in popularity and the downfall of of Microsoft.

Things like this, are making me regret the fact that I'm trying to get my MCSE.

To be honest I'm already getting tired of working on PC's. Knowing how I am, more then likely it won't be too long before I make a change.

Just give me a wireless tower and repeaters. They wanna make a pigopolist network, fine, we'll make our own open network run by the users as it was MEANT to be so many years back.

If this is what they are going to try and do, its crazy! Compuer users are not going to stand for this..... i doubt that anybody will buy thses computers when they hear the facts. They can only control us if we buy the materials that have this stuff on them. "We must rebel!"

I understand what you are saying, but that is, IMHO, not the way to look at it. Just because microsoft does something that prevents using things the way we're are use to doesn't mean we should forsake the technology. It's getting something running opposed to it that makes the most sense to me.

I will not give up my pc because some company is trying to dictate what I can and can't do with it. Changing laws to allow this to happen is a crock. How can the government in one breath condemn ms for being a monopoly, and in another breath, the cdbta, make illegal for- for sake of argument- something like linux to run opposed to microsoft. without the cdbta some of these concepts will have no teeth. but when and if the cdbta does pass, I think, it paves the way for microsoft to do what it wants.

I would give brembo's left nut to see what Microsofts actual agenda is. First software, hardware, and then whats right and whats wrong (authentication server in paladium). nope sorry, mp3's are not allowed. oh, and that linux ISO on your hard drive, sorry but we don't have a certificate for that *zap*.

One of the good things about all this is, It's microsoft which means it will be hackable :D Seriously though, I can see people figuring out how the authentication process works and somehow bypassing the real authen. server in favor of one they have setup and can change at will. Something like that could even be the basis for a parallel internet. Yeah, I am speculating at a lot of things, but we have to see all the possibilites/limitations of something before we can fully react to it.

What can we do, how many politicians are actually going to side against microsoft on something like this. And realistically we can't vote in opponents to this to all seats in government, or even the amount to have an impact on such a thing. AND we rely on the politicos themselves to tell us they're views on it. Will they tell the truth knowing that if people knew what all this really meant they wouldn't most likely be voted in.

Which brings us to what? How to react once all this gets put into operation. grim. It will be very bad, IMHO, if we get to this point. But it is a very plausible concept.

First step should be trying to knock down the CDBTA and DMCA. Don't get me wrong, I can live with some sort of copywrite protection but everything I have seen so far way oversteps it's intended purpose with too many other uses for it, with no checks and balances that I have seen (like being able to hack into suspect computers- who says whats what and what if they're wrong) Has anyone seen an update yet on the verizon case in Pittsburgh?

Yeah, this got a little long. I gots a feelin' though that this won't be the longest post on the subject. And I think it's all worth reading.

if needed I can put pictures in it if it will help :D

Nice thread...

But let's see what all of this really turns into. Don't forget one thing: US laws are not global. MS doesn't have as much grip on the EU govts as it has on the US govt.

My bet is that if the scenario as depicted in the article really does come true (in the US), there will be plenty of producers of non-palladium hard and software over here in Europe. Okay, you guys might have to use satellites to tune into the non-palladium network to get access to the software, but hell, free stuff wouldn't be totally out of the picture.

And really cannot imagine that all companies running MS OS' would actually allow MS to have ANY sort of access to their documents... that is just beyond belief. Alternatives would pop up, soon enough. So, we wouldn't buy an Intel or AMD anymore, maybe Cyrix; Nvidia already has knowhow in producing mobos and graphics processors. Producing a CPU is not totally beyond their capability should the need for an alternative be high enough. Infineon (With Siemens-Nixdorf backing...) is capable of producing fine ram modules, why not try processors..... you get the idea.

There's a German proverb that says "Nothing is eaten as hot as it is cooked", I dunno if there's an English equivalent (probably is), but I think it is appropriate in this context.

Or, we'll all stick to playing whatever games are out there until this misanthropic plague hits, maybe on huge F***-Palladium-LAN-parties, and show them that we don't need their crap... :D

It won't happen to the extent the author of that article believes, but a watered down version is in the works (from what I've heard and read)

There will be an option to turn it off, and on. It is mainly for businesses to keep thier machines respectable, and safe.

No way it will be as in that article, that's BS
