BF 1942 - don't understand the hype

Post by reverse »

I played the demo this weekend and was basically disappointed. With all the praise and glory people are gving this game, I thought it would kick RTCW's ***. I don't know if I just may be missing something but from the 2 hours I played it, the only thing I could understand why people would like this game is due to the ability to drive vehicles and fly planes.

Things I disliked:
  • -Movement felt floaty
-Don't see any indication that you hit someone (no feedback)
-Running might as well be walking (need vehicle to get anywhere)
    -Characters look horrible
-Audibly hard to tell where shots are being fired relative to your position (have 4.1 system)
-Heavy artillery/Planes seem to have limitless ammo
-Other than taking a dead persons gun/class, no way to get more ammo while remaining teh class you selected
Things I liked:
  • -Map/graphics are nice
-Ability to use vehicles and planes are cool and easy to use
    -Easy to outsmart people
Maybe I am just a n00b and don't understand it fully but for the most part, the only reason I played for 2 hours is to see if it hopefully got better. I can't say that I was hooked like when the RTCW demo came out (4 hours continious play only stopping to go to sleep). If any of you could enlighten me as to what is so great I may try it again. It's not that I don't like these types of games, I just think RTCW has spoiled me (can't wait till the expansion pack!).

One reason: EA made it.

I do like the concept of being able to operate vehicles with more than one player simultaneously, but the realization is crap.

Let the iD create a game with this concept, and it will own...

You can reload. You simply need to find an ammo crate and stay near it a few moments. Vehicles do not have unlimited ammo unless the server is set up that way. Planes can fly VERY low over an airfield and be rearmed and tanks can do the same by pulling up near various 50 gallon barrels.

There are feedback animations that you are hitting someone. At close range you will notice that their gun appears to be point down as if they were just punched in the gut. Their helmet may fly off if hit by a headshot.

Buy full headphones. Positional audio is ALWAYS batter in games using headphones because there's less background noise to interfere. I can easily tell which direction a plane is approaching from and where fire is coming from. I use ear earphones. Specificaly these:

Etymotic Research ER-4P

"Closest thing yet to a direct sonic connection to your brain." Stereo Review

"... the best balanced & smoothest-sounding way to turn signals into music that I have heard..." David Ranada (Sound & Vision)

"... once you hear them, you won't ever listen to anything else again." Corey Greenberg (BestStuff.com)

23db of external sound reduction effectively means total isolation from all but the noisiest environments.

You are right that not having a vehicle can mean a long walk. On the other hand, the maps are HUGE with varied and detailed terrain. It's a glass half full or half empty.

Ah, so the n00b I am understands now. I was wondering why people were shooting at the ground. Thought they found some retarded soldier class or something that I was unaware about it. I guess the server had unlimited settings setup. Never knew about any ammo crates but did see the fuel barrels.

Well, if I'm bored I'll try it again. Thanks for the feedback Bouncer, clears alot of it up.

how does this game compare to Medal of Honor: allied assault, if at all. Weird that three wwii games came out at roughly the same time, couldn't see buying all 3 of them. I like MOH:AA over RTCW, but where does this fall in? Seems the biggest difference is the vehicles. how about gameplay?

of course, this will only get answered if any you played MOH I guess lol. eh, reaching.

  I totally agree with Immortal!! I too have MoH, and I find this more fun online than MoH online play. Offline I would choose MoH though.

And I also agree with davy19, I seem to have more fun playing BF1942 online more than UT2k3.

Noevo...Just remember to download the MP demo and not the SP demo.

i guess it is impossible to design a game that everyone will enjoy. i like the bf1942 demo, but i know others hated it. and you mentioned it is nothing compared to RTCW, but i really hated RTCW.

the only reason i like bf1942 is they put vehicles into the levels, i have never seen this in a first person shooter and this really gave the game a plus in my opinion. but i don't get as detailed into liking a game like you, such as noting the character details, and the "floating."

u know the first thing I realized about rtcw....

I don't feel like I'm trapped inside a box and have to fight..

it actually feels real... limitless... and stuff... just the feel of hte game makes it fun..

Operation Flashpoint is the same way.....Feels real and limitless. Plus drive and fly anything that moves. But I like BF1942 just a bit more. I've been playing the game since this past Saturday, and I havent even played all the maps yet ffs!! All the ones ive played so far I really like. :)
