Post by Joeyslucky22 »

Ok Im a serious gamer and Im deeply into online games. I love them and cant get enough of em. But yet something is stopping me from enjoying my time playing my favorite games, such as Counter-strike, Return To Castle Wolfenstein, Battlefield 1942 .

What happens:
I start the game, everything is going perfect. I connect to a very nice pinged server (100) and play. Everything is going beautiful. The FPS and Gameplay UNTIL

20-60 min. during gameplay I start to get lag
I check my ping.. 120 im fine, but this lag is buggin the hell outa me! and its not going away!

I keep playing but the lag starts turning into something you cant ignore and the game is now a peice o' shiat!

after i keep playin my lag problem gets WORSE yet my ping is fine (120) and my FPS HIT THE FLOOR!

My sound starts to chop and the game is just completly NO GOOD AT ALL. So i quit and restart my computer... After i restart everything is perfect again.. what the hell keeps going on?????

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME! I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO FIX THIS! ATLEAST GIVE ME SOME IDEAS! PLEASE!

I don't play the other games but I do play CS. You might not have the right rates in your config. I used to get huge lag spikes and nasty choke cause I played around with my rates to much. There are three pretty important ones to play with.

Here are my current settings:

rate 9000
cl_updaterate 20
cl_cmdrate 35

Some people swear by cl_cmdrate "101" but I had a lot of lag spikes when using it. If you want to see some other ideal settings that might work even better try this site:

P.S. Get rid of ME

What im really concerned about is that EVERY online game is just like coutner-strike for me (Lag/choke wise)...

I really dont think my OS has anything to do with it. My friend uses ME and he has no problems at all with his online games...

I really think its my router.. how would i by pass that?

Are you having problems running the games straight up? Ya know just playing the game regularly, not online?
Respect it.

Cant realy pass it or turn it off

What the router does is.... Takes one IP your isp given Ip and splits it to say in your case 3 Router maid IPs then when PC A.
Ask for web site the router sends out for it and receves it then send it to PC A. same for B. And C usin the routermaid Ips

That works good till your poor router is tryen to do that x3

but you having to restart makes me think it could be a memory prop or Yes your OS win me is junk man and your pc as good as your OS

Make sure your killen all your back ground apps and tray apps

FPS (frames per second) if maxed to high could cause lag it puts the sever under to high of packet demand

I would upgrade my OS make sure them other 2 pc are off and all my background apps are off

what vid card you usen?

Win 2000 Sux who ever told you that should be shot :D

win Me in my eyes is worse then win 95

If you dont want to use NT (2000 Xp ) use win 98 but burn that ME

lol ok. Ive been reading around and Microsoft is saying ME has a SERIOUS memory leak problem. I guess i should do to 98. But I have been trying programs such as

memwasher - http://www.voodoofiles.com/2879
cacheman - http://www.outertech.com
max mem - http://www.analogx.com/contents/downloa ... maxmem.htm

When i run these in game, my games run great. but after about 30 min. into playing or on a map change, my computer losses it and goes all choppy etc.

Thanks for the help everyone, ill tell you if going to 98 worked...

IF you have any other ideas on what might fix it LET ME KNOW!

And no i dont get the problem when i play games offline.. its just online when they start acting up

thanks all

I've never played games on WinMe, but I've found it to work poorly in a networked environment. Poor file transfers and such. I think MS did some really bad tweaks to the TCP/IP stack.

If you are setting up a PC just to game with Win98SE works great and is fairly easy to manage with a few tweaks. I've never had as many problems with 98 that I've seen others have here. It's still my favorite as far as gaming goes, XP is catching up with it though, after you disable all of the Fisher-Price stuff.

As far as fixing the problem now, I would get the latest NIC drivers, delete everything from network neighboorhood and start over.

Write down all of your settings first.

yeah i was gettn choke/loss sometimes it depends on how bz the server is, the spam that is goin on, where the server is located, dedicated or admin is playing (couldnt think of the word), and maybe it is a bz time for ur isp. yes ME is a bad networking OS i would recommend XP cuz that is what i run and i dont have any probs....that much anymore

I have a linksys router also and was having problems when I play games and someone else on one of the other machines hops in to play. I droped my fps down tell it was ok for us all to play. You may want to try this and see if it helps. Also make sure you have the up to dat firmware. Good luck

Oh yea and for OS I use 2000 on one machine windows 98 on another and xp on the 3rd I like 2000 the best so far. All the bugs have been for the most part worked out. XP is still on going with the fixes and drivers and stuff I am sure one day it will be as good. But for now I am sticking with 2000 ME is ok but to much crap going on in it slows it down. But everyone has there favorite and I shared mine with you you just have to fine the one you like best for how you use it so I would say try each one out and see what one works for you.

If you're serious about online gaming, and pings, start with some solid hardware. While the Linksys router is pretty decent for average use, it doesn't have a lot of horsepower, something us serious gamers usually want. We like good CPUs, we like good video cards, we like good sound cards, you should also follow with good network cards if you game on broadband, and a good router.

I love the Linksys routers for average use on simple networks with modest internet needs, but for serious gamers, they are not!

Suggestion...Nexland ISB SOHO...one potent router that runs like a raped ape! Actually marketed towards gamers.

http://www.nexland.com

Also a good NIC, hopefully a PCI NIC, best around are 3COM 9XX series, and Intel Pro series. With the latest drivers!!!

Lean out your network protocols, nothing extra and not needed running, right?

Anti-virus real time file protection turned off when playing games?

Spyware cleaner run recently, such as Ad Aware, or Pest Patrol?

All others various things shut down which may affect online performance, such as ICQ, mIRC, other messangers, windows update checkers turned off of the default check every 15 minutes, other things that accumulate in some peoples systray.

All windows updates downloaded and installed? Yes ME is not well liked, it's not accepted in the corporate world, but for stand alone machines, with all updates applied, it isn't that bad. I do like XP though! or 98se!

hey everyone,

Try a new video card, I know other's out here will say I have no clue what I'm talking about but, I had the same card as you running Win XP with Bad lag with great ping times. During a game someone told me to put the in game vidoe settings way down to barebones and the lag just about went away. I went out and bought a new 4600 TI card and with everything maxed I don't have my lag issue anymore. The G2 card you have can't keep up with the newer online games.

Try it out.

Windows Me is like the early-to-mid 1980s cast of Saturday Night Live. You're forced to wonder why it was even put out for human consumption.

Download SiSoft Sandra or another good utillity and check for "HEAT". Games like BF1942, Aces High, Quake, etc really get those vid and sound cards heated up.
From what you described in your post, your game play turns to crap after 20 minutes or so of hard gaming ?

If it is a temp problem I know a cheap fix. I build gamers for a living. The new GF4 Ti series cards can really get hot. The new systems like the AMD XPs and P4s with the DDR ram put out 10 to 15 degrees more heat than the old P-III or Athlon systems.

First lower some of your sound card settings in Control Panel/Multimedia and within the game control. A hot sound card can produce stutter and lag .

Get a 122mm 12volt fan from your PC store. Cut or have someone cut a perfect circle the exact size of the fan blades in the removable side of your case . Allign the fans flow near the sound card. Instant 5 to 8 degrees cooler.

I would tend to agree with sturtz. It sounds to me like a heat problem. What kinda cooling you got in your system and on the vid? Are your vid and sound cards close together? If you have room you might want to move your cards around a little and maybe invest in a system fan. If you can check your temps before and during the problem you might notice that it is heat. Also check for resource usage. Don't forget that you want to try to have nothing run on the first PCI slot (the one closest to the APG slot) when you use an AGP card. These 2 slots share the same IRQ (just incase it is a resouce problem). Give it a try or at least consideration and let us know what you find out.

the sound card is in the bottom slot, there is nothing in slot 1, and i already have an extra case fan plus i usually run with an open side to my case. So heat is not an issue here. I would agree if the ti was causing my lag but since the ti has been installed I don't have the lag issue.
