Create Ram Disk Drive to Speed Up Internet

I created a Ram Disk Drive and using it for my IE6 Temp files, and have noticed a nice increase in speed. The Max size windows allows is 32mb. Here are steps involved.

Click on 'Next' on the 'Welcome' screen of the Hardware Wizard.

The Hardware Wizard will scan your machine for new hardware. Let it finish.

Then, when it finds no new hardware, say YES, you have the hardware in.

Then go to the bottom of the next screen's list and choose the 'Add a new hardware device' option.

Use the 'Install the hardware that I manually select from a List (Advanced)' choice.

On the next screen, use the first choice 'Show all devices'.

It might take a while before the next screen appears - please be patient and wait.

From the next screen, choose 'Microsoft' in the list and select the 'RAMdisk Driver'. There is also the 'Have Disk' button - if you click that button, you can manually select ramdisk.inf from C:\WINDOWS\INF

Click 'Next' and the Hardware Wizard will install the RAMdisk driver

If it asks you for a file, enter C:\WINDOWS\INF into the location field.

I use a Ramdisk but only to load my TCP/IP & AFD parameters into. In my opinion there isn't much benefit in using it for your temp internet files because pages will only load faster if you have already visited them.

What do you mean to load the Tcp/IP & Afd Parameters into. Not following. Yeah, good point on the Temp files, ah ah never thought of that.

Just follow the article here written by CableNut & Dannjr (they thought this up). The instructions are basically the same for XP, do a search here in the forums or at DSLNuts Forum using the keyword Ramdrive or Ramdisk and you will find ALLOT of threads about it. Also the problem I have seen when loading the settings into the Ramdisk is that your firewall may not start properly, I use a router so it's not an issue for me, but a work around may be to set your firewall so you have to manually start it once your pc has booted and everything loads properly.

If you want to add a ramdisk to increase your browsing speed, why not use Netscape 7?
NS7 can make a RAM cache itself for browsing.
I set the 32768mb RAM cache, and 32768mb HD cache.

=)

hey mnosteele,

I do exactly the same thing that you do with the tcpip and afd sys files loaded on a ram. Do you know of anything else that would be beneficial for a ram? BTW..i also have my comspec pointed to the ramdisk.

It lowered my latency a bit and web pages load faster, but most of all my connection is much more stable and consistant. Also SnotRocket, I experimented with other things to load into the Ramdisk but never really found anything beneficial.

I had a look through thte guide by Dannjr about loading TCP/IP and AFD parameters into Ramdisk, but I couldnt figure out how to...I'm a little confused.

The best advice I can give you is follow the article exactly, read it a few times for it to sink in. If there is one particular part you don't understand I can maybe help explain it better, but the article is your best bet to follow.

Ok, I tried it, but I couldn't connect so I used sys restore back to my previous settings.
