High Schoolers - what do you expect?

Post by mountainman »

This is a question for those heading into high school this year.

What do you expect from the first day of class? Do you expect to start into the content? or for the teacher to start with procedures, rules, and a little personal info?

Let me know. I start my first year of teaching on Monday.

Usually our teachers will just explain a little about the class, hand out some rules and things you will need. Then they usually give some information about themselves and then usually go around the room trying to find out a little about each student. We have literally 20 new teachers this year lol, it is going to be a blast! The district bought a lot of the old teachers out to save money.

And thanks, Brembo. :)

some sort of inspirational speach/ lecture about the benifits of education and goal oreintation. Give me a reason to attend without brainwashing me.

I was going to post a link to that thread, but the SG search results for "bullsh|t" were too numerous

sometimes you have to think outside the box to get inside the box ;).

I'm not in high school........ but I'd always like it when the first class was an introductory one. Tell a small amount about yourself, and explain in detail what the class is going to cover, the difficulty of the material, number of tests, style of tests, grade scale, and your general expectations -- how the class time will be spent, any special rules etc. Being relaxed on the first day is usually appreciated. It doesn't mean that dedication won't be expected the next day.

But how you need to handle it may depend on what kind of students you have. Are they really smart? Are they gonna be discipline problems? etc. A different approach may be required for different people.

You guys...this thread is REALLY very helpful to me. You are all having some ideas that are like "Oh yea!" type moments when I read them.

Keep them coming.

Thank you so much.

ok then, in that case...since you're new...to get EVERYONE wanting your class...after everyone get seated, stand in front of them and say:

"Ok, first off, I jump out of perfectly good planes for fun"

I bet by the end of the day, every student would wanna meet "that crazy teacher"

First day?

Here in Maine it's either a, "let's have fun and joke around" class, or a "you're going to get a pile of work due tomrrow" class.

Depends on the teacher.. but yes, a relazed first day is a boon.
So trade that typical for something colorful, and if it's crazy live a little crazy!

Jumpinduo.

DO NOT ASK FOR THEM TO TAL ABOUT THEMSELVES!!

If they are in grade nine, and you go around the room asking them to say a lil thing about themselves.. I wouldn't. They will think less of you if you make it all cutesy. And most of them will be embarassed..

Instead give them a sheet, or an overhead.

Oh yeah...one other thing...

When a student is out for two days and on the third day there is alot of work due...if he's falling over trying stand up to talk to you about turning in the work the following day...have a heart and take his work...had a teacher do that to me after missing two days...couldn't hardly stand up the first two days but the third day I was able to walk around okay...he almost caused me not to graduate...

It has been my history that sometime easy going teachers are sometime easy to take advantage of, (im in no ways like a bad kid doing mean things and such, honor roll etc) but when teachers leave me an oppurtunity to cut a class i will take it... I love teachers who aren't *******es who seem to think they know everything even when they dont.

In my experience i loved all the teachers who taught you a lot of the subject at hand and more that is non-school related, and can give you break, along breaking ur back...

I hate teachers who give no mind to the students and get lazy and just give you busy work to do, since they too lazy to get their own work done...oh and good luck in ur 1st class

I always hate it when the teacher or TA ask me to introduce a little bit about myself. And Last year when I was in first year university, the TA for linguistics did this...(Usually If you're a teacher..this method is a good time-waster for the first class)...and i hated it!!!

Thanks for all the new replies, folks! :)

I guess I wont ask them to share about themselves. I will probably just start and introduce myself to the class and tell them about myself. I will open it up to questions and stuff like that.

Then, I'll have each student choose a Spanish name from some lists that I have. After they do this, they will each fill out a notecard of information for me (name, birthday, addy, phone, parents, etc).

Then, we'll go over the sylibus for the class. If there is time leftover, we may start learning the alphabet.

What do you think?

Well, i must say ... i love when my teacher gives me an outline for the year, showing the main course, so i can advance if i feel i can. Just be cool, and nice .. and dont be all demanding and "im the boss now ... right" ... everyone will hate u then. We had a new teacher come in this year, and before we even met the guy we were passin judgements on him ... and i had him for religion ... he turned out to be the nicest teacher i had.

Good luck!, btw how long are first periods there ? They are only 10mins here.

If you are teaching college level or gifted classes start the first day. If not just go over your syllabus.
Also, don't play one of those stupid name-learning games with the students.

I usually just bring a pen and one piece of paper in first day to take down some info, and I don't think alot of people would be prepared to do some work the first day.

Welp, I'm going into Gr.12 Next Week....

Usually teachers just give a brieft intro about themself, and sometimes give out a handout asking for some info on the students, like sports, interests, etc.

LAst year, my Gr.11 Bio teacher had an interesting thing, she had a list of things that people had done in the summer (eg. Got their driver's license, went to a baseball game, etc), and she asked for every student in the class to get 3 names for each of the items of the list. Therefore, the students got to introduce themselves to other students....

I dunno, just an idea.

Good Luck. I know it must be nervous/intimidating to start teaching highschool.....I know I would be nervous :)

I go into OAC this year. And the teachers will probably give us a little intro then start with the work.. Here's hoping they don't do that.

And try to be easy for the first few days, you remember how hard it was to get back into the swing of things.
