2K & XP Users Please Try

Post by mnosteele52 »

Here is something I would like 2K & XP users to try and give me some feed back if you would. If you use Cablenut try the following changes and let me know what if they improve your connection at all. First the DefaultRecvWindow value, make this value your ISPs download caps in kilobytes times 1024 i.e. for me my download cap is 375 kilobytes, so 375 x 1024 = 384000. Then do the same for the DefaultSendWindow value, take your upload cap in kilobytes and multiply it by 1024 i.e. for me my upload cap is 32 kilobytes, so 32 x 1024 = 32768. Also set the MaxFastTransmit parameter to 64. Once you have set these parameters open regedit and set the BufferMultiplier value to 1024 (which is 400 hexidecimal value). It is under the following key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters if it is not there make it a DWORD value. Please give me some input on any difference it makes. There are a few other values I am currently testing and I will post them soon. Thanks for any input - mnosteele52. :) :D

P.S. Remember this is your cap in kilobytes NOT kilobits, just divide your ISPs advertised speed by 8 to find the value in kilobytes. :D

Well i did what you said and after a few more little things (Guessing) I went from average of 2850 or so to a steady 3514 8 tests in a row the same. these tests were done a toast.net. Thats a little strange isn't it. The same number everytime? Me like though.

mnosteele62, if they leave MaxFastTransmit blank in Cablenut, wouldn't it use default value of 64 :) TCP Optimizer does

No because this is also not a native value in 2k & XP. The whole AFD parameters are not there by default, they either must be manually added or done with Cablenut. :) ;)

I've noticed less lag and my ping is more stable in online games.
But I set the buffermultiplier to 512 (defaut value) and i applied your formula.
defautrcvwindow : 32768
defautsndwindow : 8192

So I have a question :)
Why do you set buffermultiplier to 1024 ?
Sorry, my English sucks :-)

Your speed is great, but just for kicks try the following and see:

DefaultReceiveWindow = 448512
DefaultSendWindow = 49152
DisableAddressSharing = 1
InitialLargeBufferCount = 1000
InitialMediumBufferCount = 3000
InitialSmallBufferCount = 5000
LargeBufferSize = 409600
MaxFastTransmit = 64
MediumBufferSize = 150400
PriorityBoost = 0
SmallBufferSize = 6400
TransmitWorker = 32
FastSendDatagramThreshold = 4096
EnableFastRouteLookup = 1
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
IgnorePushBitsOnReceive = 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 64240
MaxFreeTcbs = 8000
MaxHashTableSize = 16384
MaxNormLookupMemory = 5000000
SackOpts = 1
SynAttackProtect = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 0
TcpMaxDupAcks = 2
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 1460
TcpSendSegmentSize = 1460
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 30

TcpWindowSize = 64240
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 40

The reason being this.... you want to convert your DefaultRecvWindow & DefaultSendWindow equal to your caps in bytes, your caps are in kilobytes so to convert them to bytes you multiply them by 1024 (1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte) and the BufferMultiplier value should be set to a multiple of your DefaultRecvWindow & DefaultSendWindow. :)

Just playing I set BufferMultiplier to 1024 instead of 400 and got:

Test running..........
** Speed 3502(down)/362(up) kbps **
(At least 70 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

And I dont have that Xsetup thing installed, I have to push button to shut off

DOS Speedtest good with BufferMultiplier set like this :)

Testing consistently over cap of 3000 after changing values and adding AFD reg entry.. Results ranging from 3014 >3084, but then again, this is one of Adelphia's "good" days. However I've never gotten repeated values over 3000 until today.

Very nice.

While on the forum does anyone know what this means in Event Viewer Win2K

"SAM failed to start the TCP/IP or SPX/IPX listening thread "

Are there any resources being utilized or is there something I should change in registry or network configuration. This is not anything new, it's been happening all along.
Thanks
