Just got Bellsouth DSL and need help
http://forums.speedguide.net/cgi-bin/op ... 1026609824
I just got my dsl up and going and the speed usually checks out at 1148. I have downladed the tcp optimizer and the analyzer above does NOT correspond with the tcp optimizer in regards to rwin. The optimizer states that my rwin is at 256960, but the analyzer says 65535. The MTU is also conflicting. The optimizer says 1454. I have Windows ME and a Toshiba Satellite 850 mhz laptop pc. All settings are default because I reinstalled os before installing BS DSL. The BS DSL uses something called connection agent and I believe it may change some settings. There are also the following adapters listed, do I need all of these:
Dial up adapter
Intel 8255x-bases PCI Ethernet Adapter 10/100
Dial up adapter
AOL adapter
AOL dial up adapter
Realtek RTL8139 A-based Fast Ethernet Adapter
I am using a Alcatel speed touch home ethernet modem and use a 32 bit pcmcia network card for my ethernet connection.
Please leave message here and/or email me at davtunfs@bellsouth.net
Thanks in advance.

The first thing you need to do is get your MTU straight, to do so open regedit (start - run and type regedit) and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NdisWan\ Parameters\Protocols\0
under the 0 look to the right and change the protocol MTU value to 1492 and reboot to take effect.
Then try the following with the TCPOptimizer:
Settings tab:
select - DSL PPPoE
check - custom settings
network adapter selection - your NIC
check modify all adapters
maxmtu - 1492
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window - 17424/23232/27588/36300/55176/92928
MTU Discovery - yes
Black Hole Detect - no
Selective Acks - yes
Max Dup ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options - uncheck both boxes*
(* if using TCP Receive Window of 65535 or higher check windows scaling)
Other Settings tab:
Max Connections per Server - 20
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 40
Lan Browsing Speedup - optimized
Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect.
After doing those things please post another TCP/IP Analyzer test so we can make sure your settings changed properly.

TCP options string = 020405ac0103030101010402
MTU = 1492
MTU is optimized for PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.
MSS = 1452
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1452, which equals MSS.
MSS is optimized for PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for maximum throughput.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 92928
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 1 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 46464
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63888 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 3717.12 kbps (464.64 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1486.848 kbps (185.856 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 54 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000
I just did another speed test and it came out 1222, best so far. I used the highest rwin mumber in your post. Now what else should I do?

OK, now my browsing experience has been slow. Sometimes it will take what seems like an eternity for the web pages to load and somes times have to "End Task" because the pc freezes up while trying to load a web page. I am running IE 6.0 and have installed all updates. What should I do?
Here's a tcp analyzer test. It says I have W98, but I actually have W-ME.
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; Win 9x 4.90)
Note: Read the FAQ if the above is not your IP address.

Dave I'm sorry to say I think your problem is AOHELL, I beg people NOT to install it on their pc because it only causes problems.
Try the following RWINs 27588/36300/55176/74052/92928 I wouldn't recommend going any higher than 92928. You might also try the following:
1. Repair IE - control panel - add/remove programs and select remove IE and an option will be repair.
2. Power cycle your modem.
3. Update your NIC drivers and set the duplex mode according to what your ISP supports.
4. Clear your temp internet files.
