@home network
hello,
I'm running on the Rogers @home network in Toronto Canada,,
up intill recently ( past few months ) I've always been able to connect muiltipe computers to my cable connection, and obtain muiltiple ip'z, staticly. with no trouble
but now I can only connect one machine, with only dhcp, and can't cannot get any of my linux/unix machines on line any more.
does any one know why this is, and is there a way to get around it,,?? like get more then one machine on line with them or ever get ym linux box('s) online with @home,,?
thanks in advance for any help on this subject!

hmm....that is really weird. Unless your paying for the extra IP's, using a switch just won't work anymore, actually, it shouldn't of ever worked.
I'm afraid you'll have to go buy a router if you want all the computers online.

I too am on a similar network and I have a Netgear Gateway Router to share my cable connection. It has built in DHCP among other features and is an ideal home solution. It even talks to dyndns.org and updates my IP whenever I get a new lease from my ISP. This gives me a fixed URL to use for remote desktop connections from work. It's too cool. It cost about $125 cdn a yr ago so I'm sure if ya look around you'll find one cheaper.

I also have rogers at home... I had something similar to what you had... just cable to uplink then to other computers... I tried it a few times and I never got it working.. it always tells me that that ip is being used or something... frustrated I just went out and got a router....
I never got the hub and the thing working tho... hope someone else here knows.. sorry

well I was only paying for one,
but I could pick up more IP'z any way.
and regardless of whether or not I should have been able to,
I'm asking if any one else has noticed this change in the service.
and also back to my main question is there a way to forward ports, or ip'z, or get my linux machines online..???

If it wasn't supposed to be a part of your service to begin with, it may have been a mistake on your provider's part, a mistake that they recently discovered and corrected.Originally posted by angst

Anway, you can share your connection with a router and forwards the necessary port(s) to computers acting as servers on your LAN. Plenty of people host games, web sites, ftp sites, etc. behind their routers.
just last week i was using a hub to connect 3 computers to my @home service and it worked beatifully, i know it sounds odd but download speeds nearly doubled by use of the hub.Originally posted by master7

- Mistake on their part that has now been corrected.
- You've purchsed two extra IPs at the time.
- Three IPs are included with your account, which is very possible. I've noticed a few case were cable providers provided more than one IP with an account for no additional charge. Not sure if it was a promotion or standard. You could have joined during a promotion or something.
That's not possible. Sharing your connection with a hub and extra routable IPs will not increase performance. This applies to sharing with a "server" or router.Originally posted by gobd

If you use a hub the modem will give you an ip for each computer nic card you plug into it . The cable co. can see how many ip's you have ,if you don't pay for them they will cut them off. If you want to keep them call and tell them. but they want payed for them$$$$$ here they get $9.95 for each IP And yes with some cable co. you do pick up a little speed with two IP's it will move you up to there cap.Say you down load at 1500 and they are cap at 2000 if you add the second ip you can get the 2000 down. But that up to your cable co . some do some don't
it was no mistake because i just set up the network again and it worked, and i don't have three seperate ips bought, and on the bill for last month ( i had the network up for about a week last month) there were no charges at all for a second and third ip address
and it did increase my performance, my download speeds were up to 700kbps (350kbps download at the same time on each computer) and my ping in fps games went down by about 20 or 30

gobd: the cable co I have does the same as yours and they will get around to you Sooner or later. it may two weeks or 6 weeks but they will ask you to pay for the ip's you use. so enjoy it as long as it last. If you don't think what I am tell you is true call them and ask what is your IP and they will tell you all 3 of them.
Frankly, if it's discovered that you've been doing this for a while, I'd be surprised if they didn't bill you for past months, and that's not to say I beleive you intended to cheat them from the begining, it's just how ATT operates.Originally posted by gobd
i really doubt i'll be getting charged because those guys over there are really stupid...
gobd : they are not stupid, they will do one of two thing , they may call you and ask you if you want to keep the other ip's and tell you how much they are per IP. If you tell them you want to keep them they will start billing you for them. if you tell them you don't want them they will tell you to take the computers of the hub or to use a router. But if they want to be horse ass they will sent you a bill and tell you if you don't pay it they will cut your cable off and that is tv too.SO you have to ask your self do I feel lucky
By the way , they keep a log on every user, they know when and how long your on line ,what ip you use all the kind of stuff they need to back up any bill they may sent you.

They wont give him the option of using a router. They don't support them and much rather have customers pay for extra IPs. My guess is they will just back charge him and ask if he wishes to continue to use them.Originally posted by zxc47

I don't know about that . They told me to use a router or hub. I wanted to have two modem to used on the nexland turbo. They told me that only one cable modem per house hold. But I was free to used a router or hub or both. They will not give any support for a network of anykind. but your right they will just bill him

Interesting. I've always known them to hang up as soon as a router enters the discussion.Originally posted by zxc47
