Do You Wanna Make WinXP Boot Faster?

Post by Prey521 »

Man, this little proggy just rocks!!!! Straight from MS themselves!! It's a boot optimizer which i just found out about yesterday, some of you probably know about this also. What it does is it that it watches how your system boots, the order in which your drivers load, and then it optimizes them for a much faster boot, this bad boy shaved 17 seconds off my boot time.

First download this:

http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/fastboot ... s_File.exe

NOTE:

Before you start you must have the Task Scheduler service set as Automatic throughout this process, once it's done, you can set it back to manual if you wish.

1. Extract it and put the file in its own folder.

2. Run Bootvis, now go to the Trace menu, select next boot +driver delays, and set it at 2 repetitions.

3. Let it reboot twice, start Bootvis again and load the newest .bin file it created (will be in the same folder as the app).

4. Open the Trace menu, select Optimize System, it will reboot your system and load back into Windows. In a few seconds a screen will appear telling you that it's optimizing your system for faster boot.

5. After it's done, feel free to reboot and tell me if you see a difference in your startup. Feel free to time the before and after also :)

And please, lemme know your results here, I really wanna see how it worked for you guys :)

Prey, your a mad man ;)

Nice little app, I got about 10 sec's saved on my boot time. One thing I noticed though in the trace_boot+drivers_2_2.bin file is on the I/O section it says .. ***warning*** Disk write cache disabled even after it optimizing my system.

So my question is were do I enable this?

Mine says the same thing and I'm asking the same question :)

Control Panel-->Administrative Tools-->Services, then make sure that Tash Scheduler is set to Automatic, if it isn't then just double click on it and select Automatic from the drop down menu.

I tried it....didn't do much.

Normal boot time 47 seconds.

Optimzied boot time 40 seconds.

I messured my boot time, using a stopwatch, going from my BIOS processor/memory test screen, until my all my programs in my systray were fully loaded. (Zone Alarm, RAM Idle, Simply Transparent)

My shutdown really hangs too...probably due to me hacking my registry and customizing so much, I messed something up, lol.

I gained about 6 seconds...not too bad....here is another website that will help you disable some unneeded services and there are quite a few.

Do you really need all that crap in your system tray?? I disable all that since it's already in the "Start" button in programs and recent doc's especially if you run WinXP. I bet that's where your sluggish boot is having a prob, some of it anyway. Check unnecessary "services" running in background too, disable those that you don't need at the moment you can always enable later when needed.

Run "msconfig" and click on "startup" tab and uncheck those you don't need. Similar to tweaking Win9x boot and resource probs. The more progs running in background, the longer the wait. I've tweaked WinXP Pro W/O this "bootvis" prog = 20 sec boot to desktop.
