80k with turbo? I'd be leery of that. If yer not averse to replacing the turbo in the near future, its a good car. The frame/unibody construction of AUDI's is fantastic. They have some of the tightest fitting panels I've ever laid eyes on.

Not sure about a '98. I wouldn't worry about that turbo for some time. The new cars have all kindsa modern materials in 'em, so you can throw all those old turbo analogies out the window.

If you wanna read more about people that own audis, try the VWvortex forum at: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeromain

Lotsa stuff about VW's huge line of cars: Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Volkswagen, SEAT, Skoda, etc...

I love my turbo Jetta with its 1.8T Audi engine in it! :D

Turbo cartridge replacement about 700.00 The price is still thousands under what everyone else is asking.

Very quick. Very German feel. Handles like its glued to the road. Air bags all around. Audi's are supposedly very reliable

Well, then. ONLY 700?!?! Wow, thats alot better than I though Audi would do. Damn, Acura has been rippin me off then. If its possible check some bushings for wear, engine mounts too. If they are rubber, thats kinda bad, rubber "leaks" moisture and rots. If the bushings are plastic of sorts yer in business.

Hi David

My Mom's Girlfriend drives one. She loves it. I think it's about that year or maybe a bit older.

Extremely reliable cars and you can chip them and pump up the HP real easy.

They are a Bullet Proof Engine.

Loads of aftermarket items available.

If there was a Turbo problem you can go bigger as well in the aftermarket and really raise hell, but there should not be.

They do great fit & finish in and out imho.

Seems a terrific price as well

Oh yeah. I forgot to mention that Audi's 1.8T engine is one of, if not the best rated engines available. For ANY car manufacturer on the planet.

I've heard the same thing. 300hp is not even breaking a sweat with those blocks.

Yes and Yes! Very, Very tweakable! From chipping, to exhaust to intakes to a Audi TT K04 Turbo. There's a guy over in England that's getting upwards of 500hp out of his 1.8T Jetta. That's an amazing engine.

hmmm, 80k miles on a 3-4 year old car. our '96 minivan only has 60k miles on it and thats after a 2000+ mile trip my dad recently took the van on to cali. Plus if the dealer tells you its "highway" miles, you have to take it with a grain of salt. They want to get rid of the car quick.

Well...There's quite a few. I'd suggest reading a few forums like VWvortex and checking out what the Audi folks are using for that particular car -- it does make a difference. I have no intention of chipping mine as the 180-plus hp it has is quite fast enough for me at this point. As for an installer, you'll have to check around your local area and see who's good. Again, alot of that stuff can be gleaned off the forums.

There's so, so much you can tweak on a VW/Audi. You can get interfaces for your computer too for major tweaking/tuning. Some of these guys are really into this pretty heavy.

Always take what they say with a pound of salt.

Hunterdon County NJ is famous for its highway commuters though. I put between 30 and 35K per year on my vehicles... Mostly highway....

Hi David

I found these in European Car 2000

They tested the 1.8VW Turbo which isbasically the same and came to the conclusion that they differ little overall with 40/50HP & Torque gains.

They state it's more the Company you choose to deal with that matters overall.

I'm sure where you live their is a place that handles them so Service would be best.

Yes. Audi's are great cars and their owners seem to really love them. I did quite a bit of research before I bought mine (2002 A4 Black) and I picked this one due to the reliability, price, options included, warrenty, layout and of course, drive.

Which engine did you get?

hey, my dad bought a 2000 Audi A8 a year ago, its a fantastic car. we've had no problems with it mechanically, but its only 2 years old. Anyway, that car is a rocket, super fast, great handling, and superior bad weather traction. Its a great car, and I can only assume that the attributes which make the A8 great, will transcend into the A4. in my opinion, if you have an independant mechanic check it out and all is good, go for it. its a great car.

edit; ohh, and the PRICE, bejeebus, for that price I'd say definetly go for it.

Damn these gutless cars on today's roads!

Now this: http://yallara.cs.rmit.edu.au/~tsykes/cover.jpg is an engine. 5.7 Litre LS1 Alloy V8

Big block V8's are cool, but they don't fit in sports cars. I love my V8 in my Dakota, but the 1.8T Audi engine in my Jetta just freaking screams man. And they're getting over 100hp per litre these days too out of these little guys. Amazing stuff. They are anything but gutless. We're not talking a little Geo here that has 70hp to go to the grocery store.

Look what they get of the little V8's in the CART Champ Cars. 1,000 horsepower for a little 2.6 litre V8. An engine does not have to be big to have big power. Not these days.

what did u type!!!! i swear on a baby born from a dieingmommy camel that bin laden was humping that v8s make the car a "sports"car!!!

ever hear of the camero, firebird, corvette, gto, monte carlo ss, and MANY more v8 sports cars!!!!!!

dude the 1.8 is a nice engine but a sports car needs power and a muscle sports car NEEDS a v8, 5.7 litres all the F'in way!!!!

ROFL! Good one about bin Lamer and his camels!!! But, I have NEVER considered Camaros, Firebirds or Corvettes true sports cars. Those are American Muscle Cars. And they are awesome in their own way, but they are not sports cars.

A BMW Z3 is a sports car. A Miata, Honda S2000 and Porsche Boxster are sports cars. A Ferrari is a sports car. Not a Camaro.

A sports car is quick and nimble. A Monte Carlo is anything but that. It's a family, grocery-getting car. And no, a Taurus is also not a sports car. ;)

Don't get me wrong; I love a hearty, healthy V8. Nothing beats the sound and torque of an American Muscle car V8, but if we're talking sports cars, they don't belong in that class. I am not dissing them, just wanting to compare apples/apples here.

This thing is quick and handles so nicely! AWD and side air bags....

I come from a family of gearheads. Muscle car (aka Pony car) are not sports car. A sports car is meant to handle well. Recent year muscle does handle well, but it is the quarter mile where they live and breathe. It is why the Corvette was considered the only American sports car for so many years (I guess the Viper might count as one, but I think of it as an ultimate stock Muscle car.)

The roar of an unmuffled v8 is something to behold.
