Comcast change over

So far no CD in the mail but I got a nice letter telling me how to get on their network. Says to set everything in TCP/IP to automatic and turn on DHCP for WINS (first time I have ever had to enable that for any net setup). Funny thing was it did not work. Luckily I had my old Static IP handy and plugged it back in to get my connection back. I read below that I might have to leave my modem unplugged for a few hourse to get the new MAC address of my router and/or NIC. Also, this whole DHCP for WINS, what does it do and how would on go about setting a Linksys router up under these new guidelines? And finally what is up of Comcast's new mail server? I am trying to log onto mail.comcast.net and pop3.comcast.net and it keeps asking fro my user name and password like they aren't recognized by the server. has anyone been able to access the comcast mail servers? I hope I am not alone with these problems.

I have the same problems with e-mail. I also didn't receive CD but was able to upgrade via the internet and help from tech at Comcast. However, when I try to get my e-mail from comcast.net I enter my username and password and the same login box keeps reappearing. I'm now told that I need a new password in order to get into comcast.net mailbox. So here I go again with customer service. First time wasn't bad, let's see how this one turns out.

mail.comcast.net

Outgoing is
smtp.comcast.net

mail. and pop3. are the same server and I was only refering to the inbound mail server. Still though, both do not work and I also can't send with smtp. either.

Neo86, I am getting transitioned tomorrow. I hope I have better luck than most have :) I also never received their transition kit, although the only thing i want in there is my new password. I am currebtly waiting on hold now with their tech support to get my password, it's been over 10 minutes so far and it is only 8am so I thought the wait wouldn't be too long.

When you say you are getting transitioned tomorrow what does that mean? Is someone coming over to your place and resetting the information needed to connect to the new network?

I too didn't receive my kit in the mail so I also did not get an e-mail password. I've been on the phone literally for days trying to find someone who is competent enough to figure out what is wrong and all I'm getting is transfered from phone number to phone number and not getting anywhere. The last tech I spoke to told me there's absolutely nothing he can do. There's no way of him getting my new e-mail password. He'll have to create a whole new e-mail account for me. ????? I have to wait until my whole county is transitioned over. No way am I waiting for that! Should of stayed with my old dial up. Access was only 56k and slow but at least everything worked the way it should!

i also have comcast in the nj area. conversion went well. i have a linksys router. all that was necessary was to clear the computer name and domain name from the router -- do a dhcp release then a dhcp renew. then setup a new e-mail account in your mail program using your neew comcast supplied password.

if you don't have a router just change the workgroup name in your pc from "@home" to anything and reboot your pc. you may also want to rename your computer to something more meaningfull to you.

i work fine my mail is fine -- their proxy server either has not learned all the sites or comcast has locked out some sites because i do have to use a public proxy to get to some sites including this one.

also the speed has been caped -- it sucks

Need to clear up some stuff. Since I didn't have my upgrade kit I was able to upgrade via the internet with the help of a tech. Upgrade was successful. No problems at all. The only problem I'm having like I stated before is with getting into my e-mail. Everything else is fine. But I need my e-mail! Yeah, I can still use my @home e-mail but why should I? Conversion went well.

Well, because of the change over I have not been able to visit this site for a week now... figures.. the one place I can get answers I get cut off of... also my AOL through TCP/IP isn't working right... but it's slowly coming back.. Also... on a funny side note... Comcast wants me to change from my old Cybersurfer modem (Motorola) to the new Motorola Surfboard... I tried.... my download speed got cut in half... within a 15 min period I went from 600+ KB/sec to 175KB/sec back to 600+ KB/sec just by changing modems... so for now.. that new modem can kiss my A** I'm stickin with my old motorola :D Glad to be back... gonna find as much out about this as I can before I get disconnected again... Good luck to all who are goin through this... PS I'm from NJ

I want my roadrunner back :-( this comcast change over really sucks the change over it's self was easy but they have really killed the speeds here my upstream seem to be cut in half of what is used to be and the cd they send is just a bunch of crap really it's puts the little comcast logo on IE and makes some shortcuts but other than that it's worthless IMO . I hope something improves soon I can load webpages faster with my 56k right now !

It is very possible that the CD will not be needed. The main things that will probably need to be changed are:

1. Removal of @Home software
2. Disabling of auto proxy (regsvr32 -u ahiehelp.dll) However, this is only if Comcast is NOT going to use a proxy.
3. Removal of actual proxy settings. Ditto like above.
4. Addition of Comcast.net email account and possibly the removal of the @Home account depending upon your needs. The @Home account is suppose to work through February 28th.
5. Home page will need to be reset if that is not already done.
6. It looks like Comcast is going with a true dhcp. So, you will probably need to set yourself up dhcp. This includes routers, switches, etc. They DO work dhcp too.

All I have to say, or ask rather, is "What the hell?????"
I converted on Dec. 22 and until about the 25th or so I was connecting at my usual incredibly high speeds (between 3.4 and 3.8 Mb/s) but, all of a sudden, my speed dropped down to about 1.2 Mb/s and I had all sorts of problems with getting "Page Cannot Be Displayed" errors on about 90% of the pages I attempted. I called Comcast and they assured me that my speed would go back up to what it was, but so far it hasn't. I knew this was gonna happen as soon as the new commercial said "4 times faster than DSL"...yeah, in other words 1.2 Mb/s.
Has anyone else had this problem????

Okay, so, after sitting on hold with tech support for about an hour just to find out if the speeds are going to go back up, they finally tell me that "they don't have the information at the moment." They redirect me to some other tech guy who tells me that he can't say they will and he can't say they won't. He also told me he couldn't say if the speeds were capped or not. We all know what that means....
Anyway, to complain some more....
Even if the speeds are capped at 1.5 then that would be sucky but still better than 56K, but, as I told him, the 1.5 it is capped at is still seemingly out of reach. Why am I so mad he asks....
Oh, I'm not, I love watching my dl speed start at 225KB/s (less than the 300 at least I was getting before) then drop to 125 then down to 80, 60, only to settle at a nice "high-speed" 53KB/sec.
WHAT THE F@#%!!! That's like 400Kb connection. I could have gotten a DSL faster than that. What is the deal with Comcast??
Apparently my dictionary is wrong under "high-speed". Isn't that supposed to mean fast??

Comcast SUCKS!!!!!! I haven't able to post at all because I was only able to get my internet today.

My router doesn't work. If I set it to dhcp it will not obtain it's new address. If I set it manually it will show it has the address, but when I try to browse it doesn't work. Right now I'm trying to spoof my pc's mac address so I hope it works.

Using my rather mediocre genious I made my router spoof my PC's mac address and after than everything worked fine. Apparently, dhcp doesn't work for me.

Okay, so, apparently Comcast hasn't delivered on it's promises of speed similar to @Home. Actually, I think the speeds are in another universe with @Home. I still can not download at more than 75KB/sec or so. And that's with patches and from good sites such as CNet.com. I think this is ridiculous. I'm paying for capped speeds (from what I've heard) and I'm not even getting the speed it was capped at.
Does anyone know of a way to get the speed I've been promised?? :mad: :cry:

No luck for me, all that stuff was supposed to be included with the CD, that's why I am upset I don't have it. Everyone and their mother knows not to install that junk on their computer but I guess they are sending new passwords out with it so I want it. And the techs and phone support keep telling me that they can olny look up my old settings and those are always down. Thankfully the new DHCP is up on their new server and I am seeing faster speeds since Friday when they were very slow or would not even load at all. I am also concerned about web space and want to get that transfered over ASAP.

Well another failed attempt at getting my new e-mail password. I did find out that my username has changed to a numeric number instead of what I set it up to be. The rep said my e-mail account has not even been set up yet and there's nothing they could do until it is. She did ask me to try "changeme" or "changeit" in the password field using my new numeric username as well. But that didn't work either. Maybe it'll work for someone else. Give it a try and let me know. The number I've been dialing by the way to get tech support is 1-888-675-1150. The last person I spoke to, who seemed to have a clue about what's going on, was a woman by the name of Alana. She was reached at 1-877-774-1526. Let me know if anyone has any luck.

I called too this morning and they said that e-mail will be available Thursday. She also suggested changeme and changeit. But she did say that all my e-mail accounts will be the same names, just all will have new passwords. But the new username as a numeric series makes sense as a primary logon then you can set up whatever names you want when you add users to your account.

I finally received my 3 step guide for the conversion that I should of received WEEKS! ago. Since I already did the conversion via the internet, with the help of a Comcast tech, I ignored their instructions to do the conversion and just entered my username and password info into Outlook Express and VOILA! I NOW HAVE E-MAIL WITH COMCAST.NET!!!!!! There is a God! :D

ALL OF YOU THAT HAVE COMCAST!!
Comcast connection DOES NOT require you to enable DHCP for WINS Resolution. Your settings that were there for @Home service will work for Comcast.
On the email thing...if Comcast has not sent you a packet with your login and password, you will likely NOT get Comcast.net email! Some will not get it until late February. It seems that very few if anyone has retained their original login and passwords they used with @Home service.

It is also NOT necessary, nor wil it be any much wiser to install the Comcast software!!

The conversion script their using will give you your primary login. Additonal email address are not converted. For example, joeblow@home.com will be pushed out to joeblow@comcast.net.

joeblow2@home.com will need to be set up by the customer (us) and is subject to availability.

We're loving it just as much as you guys. :p

On the bright side, there are a lot more mail servers on the new network and DHCP and DNS servers are redundant and located locally rather than regionally.
