Low on System Resources

Please help! I am brand new to Cable Modems, and my PC is locking up and giving me an error message that says my Sytem Resources are dangerously low. I have nothing running in the background except Firewall/VirusScan. At boot, my resources are between 83 and 91%. Also, this new cable modem doesn't seem much faster than my dialup. I have 192 MB RAM and Celeron 700 MGHZ (HP Pavilion, WinMe). Any suggestions?

Sounds like a memory leak.

Any suggestions on how i can diagnose this, if it is in fact a memeory leak?

Put your mouse pointer on the start button, left click, go to programs, startup. If you have anything listed (like MS office, adobe assistane) delete them all. Reboot and thats it.

All I have is IE6 loaded in my Startup folder, but Iwill give it a try and see what happens. Thanks, ESPN!

this may sound kinda stupid but my sister had the same problem. I went through msconfig,still had problem.
I checked her memory on my pc,it was fine.
I went through stuff for an hour and finaly she said she had downloaded a cool screen saver. I got rid of it and the problem was solved..... go figure..

No Ken, I never incurred this problem prior to the new modem. A tech from Time Warner installed and configured this modem (Motorola Cyber Surfer). I've spoken withh them several times and they suggested reformatting, which I have (twice) to no avail. The machine seems to boot up fine then after having my browser open (with no other programs) it will freeze up after about 15 min. I will get an error saying "There is not enough memory to run this program", then finally another error message that reads "Your system resources are dangerously low, do you want to close this program?" Then I have to reboot and start over. Do you think I just need more RAM or could it be my virtual memory? The HP initially came w/ 64 MB and I installed the additional 128 MB approx. 6 months ago w/ no problem. I have not installed any additional programs since reformatting that I wasn't running with my analog modem, nor have I installed any download accelerators or tweeked anything, as I am leary of tinkering with my registry manually, being a novice to mid-level user. If you have any could performance tweeks that are relatively simple, feel free to pass these on as well. All I have running in my Sys tray is McAfee Virus Scan and Firewall, when I hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE I can see Explorer, Systray, Alogserv, and Hpstatx

Low system resources normally indicates that you have a problem with a 16-bit (Windows 3.x) application or dll that is not releasing memory from a 64k area. Adding more meory will not help. I'd suggest:

support.microsoft.com, search for memory resources low, and start reading.

Install Windows 98se

Reomove hpstatx, whatever it is. A search of HP does not come up with any references for the program.

I just noticed something a little odd that probably has nothing to do with my post, but when I go into Device Manager under Modems the only one listed is my analog modem. Shouldn't my cable modem be listed as well?

No. It is an external device, which you could think of as part of your local network, as opposed to part of the PC.

VirusScan is Norton? If so,bingo!
Norton is a hog and I have seen this problem many times with people running their stuff on certain machines!

You should try http://www.memokit4all.com/ free for 30 days. it will tell you your system resources and what is using them.

Smart move, getting rid of McAfee. I guess I'm fiding out the hard way. I've seen lots of posts saying Norton isn't any better. Any suggestions on another Virus/Firewall Program that is?

I used to like McAfee years ago, and hate Norton. But ever since Norton 2001, and their new 2002 (which runs quite light), I've switched to Norton.

I've seen a lot of machine slow to a crawl and lose resources with many of the new virus's that came out this past summer, @sircam32 was a big one to drag machines down, also magistr.

Curious if this guy has done a full definition update, then a full system scan.

Also run those windowsupdates and get them all, patch up some of those bugs in ME.

I think I resolved my problem. I reformatted (once again), reinstalled my Roadrunner software, picked up some tweaks from this site, dropped McAfee Firewall, and am using Zone Alarm. Now I'm getting speeds at 2699 kbps! Is Zone Alarm as good/effective as McAfee, Norton? It seems to easy to configure-which isn't a bad thing. Also, I haven't had any Low System Resources errors in the last 24 hours. Many thanks to all who have helped. I'll know where to turn next time I have a problem

I went through the same thing yesterday on my own machne and at a client's. McAfee got to be a really big resource hog with the 4172 superdat and the corresponding engine.

Zone alarm works great for me.

One thing caught my eye here. Road Runner Software. You don't need it.
By chance, is RoadRunner Medic part of the software that it installed? If so, It is far worse on resources then Norton or McAfee put together and running at the same time!
