Removing IE 5.5 down to 5.0
Removing IE 5.5 down to 5.0
I know person who needs/wants to remove IE 5.5 and go to 5.0
He exclaims hes tryed everything but who knows.. he wouldnt dare let me touch his comp because I dont work at soem large PC storeand where a certifcation of any kind.. now...
I told him he should just reformat ( He thinks formats are only for extreme situations )
He claims 5.5 messed up his anti Viri, his firewall, and some other app and forced him to reinstall them all. He also claims it is so slow its unreal.
I mentioned that he has a P2 333 OEM w/64mb of ram and atleast 5 resource hogging apps running in the background including some stupid anti crash program that scans web pages/scripts...
Now I know 5.5 uses more memory or atleast thats my experience but it also has its benifs as well (not gonna debate them)
I just need a way to get him back to 5.0 from 5.5 in any way without formatting or installing other programs because he thinks all other programs are evil now... especially MS ones.. LOL
Thank You
Kinda off topic but theres no particular one for this type

you need to go to start->settings->control panel
in control panel double click on add/remove programs
in the white box find microsoft IE5.5 and internet tools
click on it to highlight it then hit the add/remove button
a box will pop up check the spot for restore to previous configuration and hit ok then let that run and reboot
you will be back to 5.0

It should have been in the Add/Remove programs if it was installed correctly, listed as Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools. If you highlight that and the Remove button, you get the choice to go back to the prior version.
Absolutely nothing to do with the GoBack feature of ME.

i did not say to remove the IE i said to do the same thing norm did except to get there in a differant way and to choose the option for restore to previouse configuration instead of repair it so check your facts again..if your friend upgraded to IE 5.5 and it is not in add/remove then his instlation is corrupted and he should reinstall it again.. no you cannot remove IE in 98 , but that is not what i said to do READ THE POST ping boy

Why not try ie6 or even opera?
I think ie 6 or opera are better choices than ie 5 or 5.5. Sure 6.0 has a few bugs in it but it seems faster than the 5 series. Opera on the other hand is a bit annoying with its banners but is the fastest browser ive ever used. Just my opinion

O.k.
There is a utility here called IE radicator.
http://www.98lite.net/ieradicator.html
However, I want to warn you, if you are getting the nice graphics on the left when you browse your hard drive or cd rom, you will no longer get it and you may even get script errors browsing your own drives! But, it will safely remove IE 5.5. IE 5.5 seems significantly slower than IE 5.0. Page transition suffers a little under 5.5. You could try 6.0, it seems a little bit faster than 5.5 but is still in beta.

Yeah i have sent him both ideas through email.
The one from 98lite looks very promising but knowing him he will be scared of all the big words it uses when explaining what it does and then forget about it.
And you said it might remove some graphics when your browsing folders? I didnt read that on the site... Are you sure that wasnt for the 2000 version?
And that might freak him out also if he knows it "deletes" something.
Thank you for the help... Ill let you know when he gets back to me.

that right there is not what norm said... And its not another way to get there.
when I had 98' I used it for about 1 1/2 yrs... and formatted atleast 5 times... Now... every time I installed 5.5 it was never in add/remove programs... Now are you telling me my installations were "corrupt" every time?
I also used 5.5 on ME for the 2 months i had that and it was also never in the add/remove programs.
Maybe we installed our IEs differently?

This might help
try this:
If "Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools" is missing from the list of installed programs, run Setup.exe from your Internet Explorer\Setup folder. If you are running Windows 2000, run the w2kexcp.exe /u command from your "Internet Explorer\IE Uninstall" folder.
