I don't know anything about setting up FTP servers, but in response to your request for "good" FTP programs, I have used LeechFTP and never had any problems. Its a bit long in the tooth (i.e., old) and there apparently is a successor under development that will have all its attributes. This site will lead you to both alternatives:

How is your LAN setup? Is it setup on a router, hub, or server (with two NICs)?
The reason I ask is because if it is on a router, I would just enable file and print sharing and not worry about FTP.
It is the easiest and safest. Bind File and Print Sharing to NETBEUI if you can.

If you are getting more than one IP from your ISP, you wouldn't want to do this as it would expose both computers to the Internet and everyone would have a shot at your shares.

Let us know how its setup and we can help you. Chances are your not allowed to run an FTP server if you have DSL or cable (residential version). Better to get the job done in an easy, safe, and legal way.

Simply run adaware, spybot, ZoneAlarm, HijackThis, AVG, update windows daily, have a router, don't open e-mail, turn off action scripting, don't use P2P networks, don't violate EULAs, and wear a condom to get Windows secured.

People say Linux is alot of work!

it's completely fine if he sets up an ftp server to share files on his internal network, the traffic doesn't go through the isps network, so it doesn't involve them

That is true, now that we know he has a router.
Had he not had a router that would not be the case (if he was getting an IP from the ISP for each computer). If the latter was the case, he would be traversing their network.

Supercool, are you dead set on an FTP solution for sharing your files?
Have you considered File and Print Sharing? If you want to set up an FTP server behind your firewall, I would suggest WAR FTP Daemon. You can get it

best FTP server I have found is G6 FTP, now it is bulletproof FTP. same thing you can get a 30 day eval and crack it :)
A mistake does not become an error until one refuses to correct it

Folding for the future ;)

 I still would like to understand why one would want or need to set up an FTP server for your own small LAN when File & Print Sharing already gives you all the flexibility you would seem to need. I use it for the 3 (4 counting when I hook up my laptop) on my LAN to run applications and transfer files without a hitch.:2cool:
