Have you tried changing the wireless channel ?
Have you tried changing the device location (away from modem, ideally at an elevated location in the middle of coverage area) ?

I have moved the router away from the modem if that doesn't help what channel do you suggest

There are 11 channels available in the US, however, they overlap (every channel spans about 3 channels up/down), so there are only three non-overlaping ones: 1, 6, 11.

In Windows 7, drop to command prompt and type: netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid
This should show you networks in range, their channels, and strength of the signal. Choose a channel that does not coincide with other networks, and, ideally does not overlap with them (at least 3 channels apart from theirs). Alternatively, you can just try 1/6/11 and see what works best for you. The most common default is channel 6, so I'd stay away from it.

I hope this makes some sense.
