Testing switch ports

I have a few offices that seem to be having issues with connectivity. Is there a way I can actually monitor or test the ports on the cisco switches? I'm wondering if the switches are starting to go. They have not been replaced in may years. Many of them in basements with no network cabinets. This is at a company i'm going through 10 offices and making recommendations for network cabinets and better locations.

Eh...depending on the age/models.....cisco has a tool called the Cisco Network Assistant.
