video card issue

Post by 24giovanni »

I have a 9 month old PC that is giving me video card (integrated) issue. Just as I get to my desktop, I get a blue screen (not BSOD) with a bunch of small little boxs all over the place. HP is having me restore to factory default. What could cause this? Should I have them repace the mobo?

thx

Sounds like the onboard graphics chip is going bad. May be a driver issue but I highly doubt it. I would have the mobo replaced being that it is under warranty. I would also suggest getting a dedicated graphics card if possible.

what HP is getting you do is wasting your time.. Either the driver is having an issue or the graphics chip is failing. So Reinstall driver and if that doesn't work then have them swap it out before warranty runs out...don't fool around or you be sitting there with a pc of junk that's dead and no warranty.

Sure as long as it isn't a hardware issue. Might want to update Windows and all of the other software you use (after re-installing it of course) and then create a new image.

If you go back 18days you are still using the same drivers and settings you are on now...think about this for a second - how is that going to fix your issue if its a driver problem and even more so how is that going to fix your issue if its a hardware problem???

really... I'm leaning more towards hardware ---- call them, have them replace and go on, best do it while HP is still in the PC business anyway or have you not kept up today?

It started to happen when I installed an internal modem. I hope it didnt conflict with video drivers. So if the image was made prior to that I should be ok with rertoring the issue. I have 111 more days under warranty so if it happens again I can send it back.

So do u think its okay to restore using the image from Aug 1st?

thx

You can use the image but it is not going to help. Get the hardware replaced before the warranty expires. After that happens reload your system, install your personal software packages, do all of the updates (Windows as well as your software) and then create a new image.

If it is a hw issue I plan on getting a graphics card instead of integrated on. If its ok for the next few months I will leave as is. If there is still an issue, I will have mobo replaced.

Just get the mobo replaced while it is still under warranty. You probably only have 3 months left at best. It would be in your best interest to do so. If it is a laptop your SOL in regards to replacing the GPU. I never have understood people who ask for advice, get multiple responses and then ignore them.

DUDE.... we are both telling you to call and have the Motherboard replaced and for very good reasons the main one that the warranty is running out. You ask for help and we gave it..if you wait you will screw up and then be sitting with a dead computer.

How do I have it replaced if they tell me there is nothing wrong with it? Can I force them to replace it? There are diagnostic tests that comes with this PC that they had me run and they passed. I hardly ever deal with vendors like you guys do so what do I tell them?

thx

This seems like an important clue to me, that should lead to an easy solution that doesn't involve dealing with HP warranty or running factory restore disks.

Exactly how do you know the issue is video related?
No one has any right to force data on you
and command you to believe it or else.
If it is not true for you, it isn't true.

First off remove what you put in... but I'm thining its just a coincidence that the graphics chip may have started failing at the same time as you plugging a modem in. But for the time being remove it and if you still see problems then contact them and tell them what you have going on.. you can't let them jerk you around either about doing stupid stuff like running a factory restore etc etc..

If its running fine now, Leave it be. Is the modem still installed? If so this and it still running fine. It was more and likely a driver issue or something else you installed. When you go back threw and install what you want on the computer .Make note of what install. In case this problem starts again, Then you will know what causing it. Sounds more like a software problem to me. Goodluck.

Bingo!
I think the modem install blew something up, a conflict with drivers, or possibly an IRQ issue.
If he gets to the point of remembering to install the modem drivers now (since it's probably an odd brand/model based on his past posts about modem problems, and the HP restore CD won't install those drivers)..then we'll have an idea of the culprit.

Could not agree with you more. Never thought of IRQ! But that is a good point. From what I have read from some of the older post with modems as you said to. It very well may be the culprit. It just a matter now of narrowing it down.

Guys, I used acronis image to restore the PC and I received the same issue as before so I rebooted PC again and all seems fine now. The modem is installed but I didnt put any drivers for whether it did on its own, I have no idea. Like I said, right now all is ok. What shall I try.

thx

Guys, Should I assume its a driver issue and not HW related?

thx

The modem was working on windows 7 but it turns out there are no drivers compatible for win7. It installed the drivers by via PC causing this issue. Should I assume the drivers were causing the issue since the problem only happened after I put the modem in?

thx

Install drivers for the modem, cross fingers, reboot....and see what happens. It's really hard to "guess"....thing is, you have to narrow it down. Process of elimination.

Download the Vista drivers for the modem if they are available. I say it is a coincidence. To make sure though why are you so reluctant to get the mobo replaced?

It must be the drivers as it is not compatible with win 7. Since disabling the card I have no issues. If I only a little over a years use out of it, will US robotics supply me with one compatible modem? I know a new one is cheap but it gets my a$$ of 1 yrs use.

if I use vista drivers, how do I make sure the OS wont grab the drivers for me so I can direct it to the vista drivers? How can I prove to hp there is an issue with the mobo when there is a good possibility its not a mobo issue? If the issue is with the mobo of course I wouldnt have an issue replacing it.

thx

That would probably have prevented me from trying it in Win7. It's a "winmodem" right? Which means it leans heavily on software...driven by the CPU.
Can usually find a model number on it and Google the heck out of it for drivers and others luck with Win7.

Update driver in Device Mangler...and force to the directory you extracted them to.

FFS just get the mobo replaced to dismiss any doubts. The modem is PCI- not PCI-E.

Cat, according to usr site it say that driver is 32bit and my pc is 64 bit. I assume it wont work then. Am I correct or does that not matter?

Uh...yeah, you don't mix those types of drivers. Shouldn't have even been able to install them.
