wireless routers suck

Post by slacker361 »

ok what am i doing wrong, i had a lynksys router that finally gave up and died, but before it did, i had to constantly go and manually reboot, take away power, and then let it boot back up , some times i had to do this 4 times a day.

Now i have a dlink dir-615 and the same thing is happening, we have to reboot the wireless router sometimes 2 times a day. any ideas? this really doesnt fit the wireless ideas or ideals..

What kind of traffic are you putting through them? Common web usage with a few computers, or heavy stuff like p2p/torrent traffic?

Is your wireless secured?

Have you tried different channels like 1 or 11?

regular traffic , 2 or 3 computer at most, and an iphone. no heavy tourrent stuff. it is not secured, as i have found that it slows it down, and i have not tried switching channels, could you explain how the channel switching would save me from having to manually reboot the router

thanks bud

WPA has less overhead than WEP.....shouldn't slow you down much....WPA2 even better.

If it's unsecured, perhaps some kiddie next door us latched onto your wireless and downloading like crazy, sucking the life out of your router.

Hard to say if it's your router locking up from something, or if it's your wireless that's just having a hard time. Changing the channel can help the wireless part. If you have several neighbors with wireless..and you're on the same channel as a neighbor or two...you can have poor wireless performance. Are there any PCs hard wired into the router? If so, when the router appears to need a reboot...do those hard wired PCs also lose internet at that time? Or are they OK?

no hard wired pc's .. we are in the country, an although i have had the neighbors on my wireless like 3 years ago , i have not seen them back in since then. The wireless router is up now for the last couple of days without needing a reboot, so i am not sure what the heck is going on, but i will keep an eye on it and see what happens
