Comments on video card upgrade

Post by westy »

So I see the egg has a XFX HD-485X-ZDFC Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 video card on sale for $119 and I'm interested in getting comments or suggestions on upgrading my 8800 GT 512 MB with this card.

I'm usually a Nvidia guy and don't care much for ATI cards but I don't think there's a Nvidia with similar specs at that price, or at least that I'm aware off.

I've been running it for a week now and the performance on 3Dmark06 isn't much better on the stock tests than the Nvidia. 12008 ATI, 11966 NVidia. It does OC better than the N, and the score go up from there....

Stop. Running. Synthetic. Benchmarks.

Just use the card. Does it work decently? There's your benchmark.

I would have rather gone with Nvidia also but Burke is right, 3dmark06 and others just won't really do it justice vs in game performance. Check it out ingame with say using Fraps to test. Crysis Warhead and graphic intensive games like that would be good testers.
