Security protocol suggestions. Maybe a sticky?

Post by Jimme »

Hi, I've been reading several threads trying to find out how to properly setup a network and managed to network my printer, notebook, pc, PS3 and wireless units. The question I have is if there is a sticky on how to properly secure the home network.

What I have:

2 wireless notebooks, my dads and moms
1 pc gaming rig - wired cat 6
1 ps3 - wired
1 wii
1 ipod
1Terabyte QNAP box
HP 1310 network printer

Linksys 54 G with tomatoe software ( if that makes sense )
2 GIGABYTE switchers.

I set up the wireless system using the suggested WPA at the wii site:

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/system ... WEPWPA.jsp

I'm not teksavvy at all and this has been a learning experience to say the least but I feel that I'm just fumbling along without a clear idea on what I'm doing.

I don't expect a teaching lesson but maybe a HOW TO would be great. I just want the system super secure :)

For homes....
Latest firmware on the router
Create a unique (not default) SSID name for your wireless
Change the default web admin password of your router
If all your devices support WPA..set that up for your wireless security. If all devices support WPA2..even better.
WEP is the old security type, it will keep innocent or beginner people out, but someone with a little bit of computer smarts can crack into WEP if they feel like it.

Thank you for the quick response. I'll do more research...my Dad knows nothing about computers and I would like to learn more. I'm in grade 10 but I don't learn much from my teachers at all. Not even sure what to learn; it's such a big field.

My friend took A+ but told me it's a waste of time.

Thanks though, I'll keep reading the forum and try to learn as I go :)

IMO the basic courses such as A+ and Networking + are not a waste of time...they start building a foundation for you to keep building upon.

Too many people rush to go get bigger certs...I see them in the field, and it's easy to pick them out..they do not know the basics.

I started out in computers with a lot of self taught and hands on...after a few years the place I was working for then put me through some schooling and CompTIA courses. Even though I figured it would be so basic and I'd sleep through the class or even be able to teach it..there were a few little tidbits I managed to pickup along the way.

Just like in regular school..it's a continuing process, you start in first grade and keep moving on up from there.

far from a waste of time, if you don't know the basics of a computer and how to repair it.
