my friends hard drive

Post by Bastid »

seems to be having some trouble...

its a maxtor80 gig external one of the small ones... he tells me he has like 2 folders of music on it, one has just a few gigs in it the other has almost 10 gigs... well he went to the larger folder and saw that it only had about 6 gigs in it... what could be going on here?

When a drive starts to go bad Windows chkdsk will do what it can to keep the drive still usable as it fails. To that end it will stick files that would otherwise be lost in the root of the drive.

Check the root and then it might be time for a new drive.

the properties say that there are 15 gigs of used space... but i can only find about 5 gigs of files... I also misunderstood him... it wasnt 6 gigs he could find but it was only 6 hundred megs out of a 10 gig file.

i also cannot get chkdsk to work for anything but C:

just sounds like to me he deleted stuff and forgot about it. If your slaving the drive you should be able to run a scan disk from the drive properties within tools.

Run a file recovery program on it (They have trial versions) and see what it finds. Although it won't replace all those files with a trial version it will at least give you an idea of what you have to deal with.
