To do a tracert, click 'Start' and then 'Run'. Type "cmd" into the box and click 'ok'.

A DOS black screen will appear. Type after the C:\>

tracert http://www.yahoo.com

and press enter key

When test is completed, move mouse cursor to the DOS black screen, click right and choose 'select all'.

Move mouse cursor to the Quick Reply box of this forum, click right and 'paste'.

Irregular ping times at the modem in hop 1.

Scan comp for malware.

Modem placed near to other electrical devices?

Any coiled up signal or power cables?

Would placing the modem on top of your machine qualify as close to an electrical device? How far should it be away from things and does this really have an impact?

I'm also troubleshooting crappy DSL performance.

The power supply unit of the comp tower is usually mounted on the inside top and that can cause interference. Power off the modem and place it on the floor below your comp table.

You should use a router as it provides you a hardware firewall.

No problem seen at your end (hops 1-3). But busy international line that spikes ping times to 270ms at hop 8.

Note: I usually censored part of the first WAN IP address (hop 2) so that hackers do not zero in to your connection.

Your router is not serving as a DHCP server as its IP address is not present at hop 1, but the ping times of 1ms are those of a router.

Hop 2 will be that of your modem. Any nearby electrical equipment to the modem? Any coiled up signal or power cable?

Post a new thread. Tell us where you are located, the speed you paid to get and post your TCP Analyzer report.

You are already getting to close to 384 kbps. Only problem is that your connection to the US Will slow down due to too much traffic at your country's international gateway.
