k i have 5 mbps cable and heres my issue.
my connection will be great and after awhile, usually like a few hours of surfing or online gaming. it will start to slow down...GREATLY. making online gaming intolerable. what is the issue here and how can i fix it? do routers have a cache tha fils up? if so, do i just need to reset teh modem and router?
i have a wrt45g which im WIRED in to and a charter communications supplied modem.

Any p2p downloading software being used?
It's a wireless router....and if you're not using the wireless, did you disable the wireless part? Or lock it down with WPA security? Else...you may have a neighbor stealing your bandwidth.
Latest firmware on the router?
There are some 3rd party firmwares which offer better stability, more options, a little more performance....such as Hyper-WRT, DD-WRT, Tomato. Depending on which version of the wrt54g you have....you can flash it with them and perhaps experience performance improvement.
Yes routers have their own processor and RAM, an overwhelmed router under too much of a load can bog down.

no p2p software being used.
my parents use the wireless part of the router, this happens if the wireless is on OR off, doesnt make a difference. and they use the WEP. also, nobody stealing badnwitdh, i ahve network magic. the firmware is up to date. i already saw the 3rd party firmware and didnt rly want to trty it with the possiblity of bricking th router.
if i got a new wired router could i use the wrt45g as an access point? would it help this from happening? and wut wired routers would u recommend that would have a faster cpu and better ram? would the modem be causing an issues?
thx for your reply.
