sorry I didn't put this in the the start was a late night last night.

I'm running Xp Pro and if this makes a diffrence I have the Motorola SB4220 Surboard cable modem, and a Belkin wireless/wired router. Right now though I'm the only computer on the network to sort this out. And I am directly connected.

Personally you don't need an rwin that high imho however though if you are getting close to an 8mg then you could revert back try thease in the optimizer.

Try thease in the sg optmizer below me to download and install

General Settings tab:
Custom settings - check
Modify All Network Adapters - check
network adapter selection - your NIC
MTU 1500
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window -128480
MTU Discovery - Yes
Black Hole Detect - No
Selective Acks - Yes
Max Duplicate ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options:
Windows Scaling - checked
Timestamps - uncheck
Advanced Settings tab:
Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
LocalPriority - 5
Host Priority - 6
DNSPriority - 7
NetbtPriority - 8
Lan Browsing speedup - optimized
QoS: NonBestEffortLimit - 0
ToS: DisableUserTOSSetting - 0
ToS: DefaultTOSValue - 240
MaxNegativeCacheTtl - 0
NetFailureCacheTime - 0
NegativeSOACache Time - 0
LAN Request Buffer Size - 32768
Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect
b]VERY IMPORTANT TO DO THE FOLLOWING:[/b]
1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need. For a stand alone pc all you need is Internet Protocol TCP/IP.
2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.
3. ALWAYS connect your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer and set your duplex mode to "auto". If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.
4. Clean out your temporary internet files with CrapCleaner.
5. Power cycle your modem i.e. unplug it for at least 15 seconds.
6. Download, update and scan with SpyBot S&D 1.4, Ad-Aware SE 1.06 & ewido anti-spyware 4.0 to remove any spyware then install and update SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to stay spyware FREE.
7. Make sure you do the faster web page tweak in our Help & Tips page.
8. If you aren't currently using a firewall then I suggest you install Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5, it's FREE and uses next to no resources.
9. Do a FREE online virus scan from BitDefender Online Scan and remove all that it finds.
10. Make sure you have ALL of the latest Windows Updates.

I'm a fan of high RWIN on faster cable...I have an 8 meg package at home...and I run at 513920 myself....I'd try both 256960 and 513920... see which does best for you.

Test shows idle time and stalling in your connection. Make sure your modem and router are kept a few feet apart and that both are placed a few feet away from any other electrical devices to avoid electromagnetic interference.

After relocating the modem, turn off its power for a few mins to let it reset. Then do a new speedtest.

Question for mccoffee (or anyone):
You recommend uninstalling all items in LAN Connections but TCP/IP. Is it not sufficient to uncheck these items? If uninstalled can they be easily re-installed if needed later?
Thanks......John

You could install the prtocols later if you need them you just control panel my network places your local area network ,and then click on install find the one you removed.

Tcpip is the only one you should really need unless you are using PPPOA, or not on a company network.

The other possibilities are presence of spyware/malware, especially so if yours is the only comp on the line and no background program is running.

Also, it could be some bad or loose cable/connectors. A tracert may show this up.

I doubt spyware/malware simply because i've had numerous re-installs of windows and such so its not likely it. What should I do to find what else it could be? I've locked down the wireless router so it can't be anyone ripping off my network.

Try scanning with a-Squared Free. It detects some items not discovered by SpyBot and Ad-Aware.

Try the wireless network tips of this thread:

Not getting any faster... any more suggestions?

Should I just get new cables to see if they are too old?

Do a tracert to http://www.yahoo.com and post.

To do a tracert, click 'Start' and then 'Run'. Type "cmd" into the box and click 'ok'.

A DOS black screen will appear. Type after the C:\>

tracert http://www.yahoo.com

and press enter key

When test is completed, move mouse cursor to the DOS black screen, click right and choose 'select all'.

Move mouse cursor to the Quick Reply box of this forum, click right and 'paste'.

There is high and uneven ping times to your modem at hop 1. Check the condition of the cable between comp and modem. Also, log into your modem to check power levels.

There is a spike in ping times at an intermediate router at hop 7. This may be the cause for your low speed. Raise the matter with your ISP.

In the mean time, test speed at this link using a few test servers in differing directions to avoid this problematic intermediate router:

If you uncheck them..they are no longer bound to it, thus it's sufficient..as long as you don't need them for any networking.
