Charter's upload/download speeds.

Post by marcur12 »

Hi everyone. I've been with Charter for about 2-3 years, and I've never seen my download speed go higher then 500kbps and my upload go higher than 50kbps. I'm using a Motorola SB5100 modem with a Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter(LNE100TX v4) card. Is this normal to get this kind of bandwidth with Charter? Thank you.

What speeds are you paying for? If you don't know it should say on one of the invoices they send you.

Yeah i also have a 3Meg Charter Connection and its really annoying and irritating because im getting a extremely slow download speed.
You should be happy u get anywhere near 500 :) I used to get like 350-400 and i was extremely happy with that and now im getting slow times.

Lately since this "slow" thing has been happening my fastest download has been 170 KB/Sec..
I used TCP Optimizer with tips from someone on this forum and it improved ALOT, because before i ran the optimizer i was getting 40KB/sec :|
But i KNOW i should still be getting like double the speed im getting now.

Any tips? Should i call charter?

When i go to DSLReports and test it i Get this,

Your download speed : 1427 kbps or 178.4 KB/sec.
That is 55.3% worse than an average user on charter.com

Your upload speed : 113 kbps or 14.2 KB/sec.
That is 69.3% worse than an average user on charter.com

Heres my tale of sloe and the fix i got for it.

I had the same issue with speed. somedays it was slower than a 56k dial up!! Here was a confluence of three bad issues happened at the same time:

a:I had a booster pumping signal TOO FAST

b: cable modem was fried due to over pumped signal

c: There was a bad cable router or something on the pole outside at the other end of my street.

After SEVERAL techs to my house and internet sleuthing I discovered that some "helpful" tech had installed an AC powered signal booster to my cable lines. Essentially what that does to a modem is keeps a max signal pushing into the modem all day and all night. The modem never gets to exact to the signal properly and eventually fries itself!

After he uninstalled booster, put a new modem on and fixed the major issue on the pole down the street.
it works GREAT!! I am pumping average 2.85 MB/s down and 252kb/s now.

Call your cable co to get the web info to their upper level testing function.
Good Luck. Keep us posted!

3070 / 484
Your download speed : 3070 kbps or 383.8 KB/sec.
That is 9.8% worse than an average user on charter.com

Your upload speed : 484 kbps or 60.5 KB/sec.
That is 19.5% better than an average user on charter.com

this is from a different one

Download Speed: 4820 kbps (602.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 471 kbps (58.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Login as "user" and "User"
or log in as "root" and "Root"

This is a very detailed modem test. write down all info or call the tech line after this runs. I think you will be back up to speed.
I do believe this "modem test site" is actually a self-diagnostic inside your modem, as the IP address you gave is a private IP, and not something that everyone on the internet can access.

I dot know what I was thinking. Sorry about that. I guess the best thing is to call your cable company and ask for the info.

I had the worst time getting Charter to believe that THEY were the problem. I called and called and finally got a guy that knew what he was doing! I suggest you keep calling them.

Chances are the problem is outside your house , down the street or in the neighborhood somewhere. They never want to say its CHARTERS problem.

I hope you get a great tech guy come out to the house like i did. I have no had one problem since they fixed the issue outside my house.

I suggest you talk to your neighbors as well. they may have the same problem, then you can all call for repairs.
