need some video card and Power supply help

Post by jixx »

I am running a Gateway AMdx2 3800+. It has a 300 watt power supply...

I want a Geforce 7900GTX... it is recommende that I use a 400 watt supply and the card also has the separate power hookups....SOooooo

DO I have ta have a 400 watt supply to run this card in PCIe?

I do have 2 4 prong connectors available from the stock Bestec supply... Will these work?

Which supply should I be looking at?

I assume that your motherboard supports a PCIe card ?......also ...gateways, dells power supplies are somewhat proprietary ...you can try and find one that fits the case as usually they have in a little bit different position that a standard case.... double check

It is a PCIe motherboard model C51Gc01

Also,

The Power supply is a 20 pin , but the MoBo is a 24 pin??? There are 4 pins left unused on the MoBo.

Can I use a 24 pin PS?

maybe 20+4???

you need a 400watt PS thats rated good.. dual 12v rails are a plus too.. don't starve that card as it will need it!

I'm running two and it seems that each likes to pull about 260 under full load.. and this isn't including what other parts I have in there that uses power.. so yes find a good replacement PS for that computer before using that card.

No need for another PSU. That should be plenty. If you have issues, use the molex to 6 pin adapters...making sure to run each vid card off a different rail.

PC power and cooling are about the best you can buy, i don't see the advantage of going modular, just another conection to have go bad.

you can hide cables pretty easily if you spend sometime looking for ways to do it, that is why i didn't pay extra for sleeved cables on my power supply ;)

I have used module power supplies before. I would not recommend them.
