Kuwaiti Lizards

Post by Joint Chiefs of Staff »

Must be mating season for the lizards were out in hundreds today just outside one of the desert camps. I heard they were poisonous if bitten //shrug//. All I know is that these bad boys are fast and freakin' mean.

They aren't fat they puff themselves up (see tail also) to make them look big and bad. They swing the tail like a bat when within range. Don't ask how we knew that. lol

I was in position to run if the lizard decided to strike. Besides, my colleague behind the lizard was distracting it more. I guess he felt cornered.

Yeah, cornering it wouldn't be a good idea. In Australia some goanna's will "climb the tallest thing in site". In the desert (much like you are), you may just be the tallest thing.. Those bad boys have some claws on em too..

Aren't "poisonous" lizards more about them biting and the cut getting infected by al the germs they have in their mouth? Isn't the Komodo Dragon like that?
Simply run adaware, spybot, ZoneAlarm, HijackThis, AVG, update windows daily, have a router, don't open e-mail, turn off action scripting, don't use P2P networks, don't violate EULAs, and wear a condom to get Windows secured.

People say Linux is alot of work!

While the Komodo Dragon is a huge lizard its saliva is REALLY poisonous. It kills its prey (Not our prey) almost right away.
The captured ones do not have this because they aren't in their environment. Its like a bacteria or virus.

The Komodo Dragon eats rotten meat and its saliva is bacteria ridden. If you fed them fresh meat and listerene there would not be any problems with infections. One in the wild will be infectious to the point of being considered "poisonous", but it is not a poison produced by the actual lizard.

My buddy in Panama was telling me some pretty funny local beleifs about the lizards and snakes. One of the lizards down there is considered poisonous, but if you beat it to water and drink before the lizard does you will live. They also believed that there was a poisonous spike in the end of their tail (no lizard in the world has that). Basically any lizard or snake other than an iguana is considered poisonous and should immediately be killed, pretty sad in my view.

Apparently no-one read the links I posted in reply to rivas' post.

http://www.desertusa.com/sep97/du_gilamonster.html
The Gila Monster is one of only two species of venomous lizards]a nerve toxin[/B], from glands in the lower jaw. The toxin is not injected like that of the snake, but flows into the wound as the lizard chews on its victim. While the bite can overpower predators and prey, it is rarely fatal to humans.
http://www.geo-outdoors.info/poisonous_lizards.htm
The only poisonous lizard known to the world is native to the desert southwest of the US and Mexico. Known as the Gila Monster or Beaded Lizard, ...
The Komodo is not poisonous. The Gila is. And the two species of Gila are the only poisonous lizards in the world.

I hope this settles that.

+1 for DePlano. :thumb:

I used to catch these critters near the Braidwood, IL Nuclear Plant, "Common Five Lined Skinks" Eumeces fasciatus:

Image

I used to crack rocks (fossil hunting) in an area outside the nuke plant, saw these critters and caught a few. Got caught by security eventually though and they let me go but had to promise not to return! Lol, I had a 5-gal bucket of cracked rocks w/ various fossils- and a small bird cage with 5 skinks....

They are not poisonous...... They appear to be of the genus Uromastyx. Believe it or not, they make good pets if you can give them enough heat.

I had a collection of lizards in the past. Chiefly vegetarian since I cannot bring myself to offer live food. Although I never owned a uromastyx, they would have fell nicely into said collection.

I had some time on my hands between desert camps. I couldn't help to stop when I saw about a dozen of those guys running in various directions. Guess it didn't help I was doing 100 km/h thur their turf. :D

Too bad I left my digital cam at home. I cursed myself because I also pack it into my backpack at night. Oh well, my camera did a fine enough job.
