Need help with LCD / Plasma specs (TV purchase).

Post by Easto »

My father needs a new TV and he has been telling me so for the past 6 months. He was recently over at a neighbors and saw a nice big plasma screen. He did mention that it was too big for his room but it got his interest so he asked me about them. Unfortunately I know nothing. He's not dead set about plasma (he's 82 years old and a TV is basically a TV) but he would like to get something that he can enjoy. I only understand the very basic configurations i.e. Plasma, LCD etc, so I need some help.

1. He's willing to spend up to $3000.
2. The table that will hold the TV would accomodate an approx 30 in wide set. He sits about 10-12 feet away from it
3. He has a cable connection.
4. He will never rent / buy or watch a DVD. Strickly cable viewing.
5. We will probably make the purchase at Best Buy since that is about the only thing out where he lives.

(also, I've read many of these sets need calibrating. Is this something anyone with a little patience can do or should I get someone to do it?)

Help!

thats awesome TV,too bad he cant get something bigger
most of the newer TVs got calibration built in (mine does),but i'm using it only when i move the TV.
Dont buy plasma,LCD is better.
Adventages:
LCD TVs dont suffer from burn-in, but can have a "retained pixel charge" which may also produce ghosting. LCD TVs lamps will last a bit longer than plasmas, but both are likely to meet general consumer expectations.
Both LCD and plasma TVs will meet the brightness expectations of most consumers. However, in "real world" situations with ambient light, LCD TVs will generally look a little brighter.
LCD TVs contrast ratios measured in real world situations double typical plasma TVs.
If you wanna find out more ask on avs forums or some TV forum.
Also look for review on that tv what i posted but what i see from product specs it kick ass.

I Love My SONY WEGA ..have had it for over 6 years now and the picture is still Crisp and Clean. Mine is the 36" model. Its heavy as hell though but I think Conventional TV's still rule over projections.

Have a look into some DLP displays, they have come way down in price last few months. They are bright, lightweight and have a smallish footprint for thier size. The hardware in them is designed in such a way that once calibrated they don't change temps or hues. The bulb in my Samsung is good for ~7000 hours, and once replaced it becomes basically a "new" display. Probably snag a 50" for ~2000$.

7000 hours? That's it? I thought that DLP's went up in bulb life? Sheesh, that's short. DLP bulbs are cheap to replace though, but that's still kinda short.

Rivas, DLP and CRT are not the same technology.

I meant that the tech behind a DLP and a standard CRT are not the same.

I'm only getting the Best Buy site with those links. Some model numbers please.

Remeber, he's 82 and his eyesight isn't like your's or mine. He has no problem spending the money, and he only watches about 1 hour of TV a day so we don't have to go with the latest killer set.

Well, yeah it's short if you leave it on 24/7. I only watch movies and play the occasional PS2 game on it. At my current rate of 2-3 hours a day it'll last 7.6 years. I often go DAYS without flipping it on, been 3 days since I did anything with it right now.

Plasma's vs lcd is now a personal preference...there is no clear one is better than the other.
They both have advantages and disadvantages, The new generation Plasma have addressed the "burn in" issue and there typically reaching 60,000 plus hours now.
LCD's appear brighter because they still have problems with the backlighting issue, viewing an lcd in a dark room can become annoying, the baclight tends to bleed thru causing the blacks to be washed out, but they are improving upon this as well.
All in all you'll be happy with either but right now Plasma's are the best bang for the buck, but that could change soon as technology advances.
