friend bought a 300GB drive..

Post by pimptrizkit »

and where having some problems getting it installed

it's a sata150 drive maxtor maxline III
300 GB and has 16mb cache.

the problem is this..
he tried getting windows to install .. but after it loads all the stuff and drivers then goes to start windows the part during set up where you format your drive and what not.

it says drive can not be found. and the post screen shows the drive..

it also says ntld missing in post or the next screen aswell..

i tried to partition it into 2 drives using fdisk..

we need to find out where the drive is good or not.... when i have it hooked up as a second drive windows see's it and will format it from windows...

Ok so the issue here is simple, you need to install the SATA drivers for the controller you are using as you load windows xp setup, even if the SATA controller is onboard. The motherboard your friend purchased (unless it is an OEM system) should have come with a little driver floppy disk for the SATA controller. Stick this in the floppy drive and boot from the windows xp cd.. when the screen turns blue (just after you "hit a key to boot from cd"), you need to watch for it to prompt you (at the bottom of the screen) to press F6. As soon as you see it, press F6 on the keyboard and follow the instructions (basically just follow the prompts and have the floppy in the drive..and it'll do the rest)..then complete setup normally. If your friends machine doesn't have a floppy drive, use a USB one. If his board didn't come w/ the driver floppy, np..look at the driver cd it came with, find a floppy..manually nagivate thru the cd on another machine -- look for the drivers for the sata controller...copy them to the floppy ..u should see a file called oeminfo, i think, on the root directory of the floppy.. this is all from memory so it's approximate.

sata drives don't have jumpers (to set cable settings anyway, it's one drive per cable) :)

nope, that's the problem..u have to install the drivers when starting setup..look for the F6 prompt and hit it, u'll see what i mean :) u can also get the drivers online from the manufacturer of the controller..but u need to know what brand/model it is (i.e. silicon image, highpoint, promise, nvidia, ati, intel, etc).

there are more files beside the oeminfo file, there should be an inf and of course a windows xp folder

Agree with Amro, sounds like drivers not installed for controller...if Windows will see it as a secondary and format it, then the drive should be fine.

yes, the model of the mobo and/or if it's an oem system would be helpful (i.e. if oem, give us brand and model number -- otherwise mobo brand and model number and we can help by giving u links to the driver)

my specs are listed in sig.

and he's running an dfi lan party ultra b with a barton mobile (2500)

i tried using the disk that came with my abit board.. but the problem is im not sure what driver to use..

i have tried the silicon imagine 3112 and the silicon image 3114..

i told him the same thing being able ot see drive in windows and formate it means it should be good.

he cant find his driver disk and i was looking through the dfi site but wasn't sure if i found the right thing... the file name was sil3114r_1008.exe and it created an floppy to boot from in the windows installer (i belive)

i almost bought this drive.. but he beat me to it so i figured i would wait and see how it installs and what not..

Is he OCing? It sounds like a memory/OC issue if its detected in bios and windows startup.

Ok so, on the floppy (i.e. when you list what's on the filesystem), what do you see?

Being OCed for windows install is never good, it means the system could be unstable, even if the OS was fine before.

Glad you guys got it going.
