Intelligent design (ID) refers to the theory that intelligent causes are responsible for the origin of the universe and of life in all its diversity
What does the push for "Intelligent Design" mean..

I stand by what I said becouse Greek Gods suck. throws lighting down from the sky. Hope you don't beleave that. though I suppose some one could fit it in the ID theory if they tryed hard enough. But anyhoo its a common fact that greek gods we're storys made up. the Romans loved storys.thepieman wrote:I don't understand tho. You said this was not to be a specific creator or God. So how do we know it couldn't be Zeus or Athena. I thought you had said it was a theory? The people that believed in Greek Gods were from a time even before the Bible was written. They were closer to the age of our birth then even the authors of Old Testament. Maybe they know something we didn't? I have seen the Parthenon in Greece, and the Theater of Dionysis as well. They built these buildings in honor of them, and they still stand today thousands of years old. I guess since you said it was proved as false (You never said who proved it as being fasle) that it won't be a possibility.

Not for nothing but what I think you and the other 51% of the Christians in this country are trying to say is you want the story thats in the Bible to be taught. Not some creator garbage. So lets stop with the Scientific theory crap cuz you know its not a scientific theory. Thats just something thats been bandied about by the President to make it seem Viable and palatable by the 49% of the country who is not Christian. Just like the war that we are paying for now. As the President said in his own words.. "Fool me once, shame

I gotta admit You had me worried there for a little while. I had actually thought that you would actually say Yes to this being an actual theory and that it wasn't something that you truly believed in. While The Theory of evolution does have holes in it, it is still science and something that can be improved upon as we gain more knowledge over time. I dont believe in the theory of evolution 100% but it makes more sense then magic powers .

Taken from your reference page:
There is much more there apparently.should ID be taught in public schools?
Ever since the failure of the creation science movement, there have been a number of activists - many of them young-Earth Christians - who have been trying to discredit evolution by claiming that ID is a scientific alternative to Darwinism. These people, led by Phillip Johnson and the folks at the Discovery Institute, have been very successful in convincing member of the media, politicians, school boards, and the general public (scientifically illiterate as it is*) that the theory of evolution is a "theory in crisis" and that ID is a viable alternative.* These two claims might well be called the ID twin towers. Neither of these claims is true but it doesn't matter at this point because they are so widely believed that we must still ask whether ID should be taught in our biology classrooms. There is also much hypocrisy and deceit in a movement that does not refer to God in published documents as the intelligent designer, but opens its public presentations with a Christian prayer and doesn't hesitate to refer to God when alternatives such as aliens as the designers are brought up.* Dembski puts it this way:
Intelligent design is a modest position theologically and philosophically. It attributes the complexity and diversity of life to intelligence, but does not identify that intelligence with the God of any religious faith or philosophical system. The task for the Christian who accepts intelligent design is therefore to formulate a theology of nature and creation that makes sense of intelligent design in light of one’s Christian faith.*
In other words, you Christians know who the intelligent designer is even though we don't mention Him by name!
As evidence of how widespread the belief is in the ID twin towers consider that the President of the United States (who has probably never even heard of Behe or Dembski, much less read anything by them*) has stated publicly that ID should be taught in our schools.* The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the world's largest organization of science educators, issued a press release saying it was "stunned and disappointed that President Bush is endorsing the teaching of intelligent design -- effectively opening the door for non-scientific ideas to be taught in the nation's K-12 science classrooms."* I understand why the teachers are disappointed but they shouldn't be stunned. President Bush's opinion is shared by millions of Americans. According to a recent Harris poll, only 12% of Americans think evolution should be taught to the exclusion of creationism and ID.* In any case, John Marburger, the president's science advisor, clarified Bush's remarks by telling the press that “evolution is the cornerstone of modern biology” and ''intelligent design is not a scientific concept.'' He said it would be over-interpreting Bush’s comments to interpret them to mean that the president thinks intelligent design should be placed on an equal footing with evolution. "If such things are to be taught in the public schools," said Marburger, "they belong in a course on comparative religion, which is a particularly appropriate subject for our children given the present state of the world."*
Bush's comments gave the media an excuse to jump into the fray. Time magazine, for example, put Michelangelo's Sistine chapel creator pointing the finger at a chimp. Does God have a place in the science classroom? asks Time on it's August 15, 2005, cover. The article provides an overview of the controversy with a nice map of the antievolution proposals that have been put forth in this century by state boards of education, state legislatures, and local boards of education.

More evidence of Force feeding a religeon
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... Id=4772331Walk into just about any Christian bookstore and you are likely to find a copy of The Soldier's Bible. The leather cover comes in a choice of green for the Army, black for the Navy, burgundy for the Marines, blue for the Air Force and -- just released -- blue for the Coast Guard.
These are handsome Bibles with gilt edges, just the right size for a service member to stuff into his or her pack. Printed on the front is the emblem for the appropriate branch of the armed services. And that's a problem.
One could be excused for thinking that this Bible was put out by the military. But it's not. Holman Bible Publishers of Nashville developed, printed and distributes The Soldier's Bible at its own expense.
Still, critics think the emblem on the front brings up legal questions -- and may even violate the Constitution's ban on government-established religion.
What's especially troubling to some is that this particular Bible is clearly evangelical. Holman Bible Publishers is owned by the Southern Baptist Convention. On the first few pages, there's a "Plan for Salvation" that says you must be baptized as an adult believer to have eternal life.
Printed in the back are inspirational words from military leaders such as Lt. Gen. William Boykin. He raised a few eyebrows back in 2003, when he said of his battle against a Muslim warlord in Somalia, "I knew my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God and his was an idol."
Evangelicals are playing an increasing role in the military. Department of Defense statistics show that 40 percent of active duty personnel are evangelical Christians. Sixty percent of taxpayer-funded military chaplains are evangelical.
"It does raise the question of whether we are, effectively, as a country -- with tax dollars -- promoting a particular evangelical religious viewpoint," said Barry Lynn of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
Add to that a privately funded evangelical Bible that looks official, and critics say the military has a problem that needs to be addressed.
The Army says the use of its emblem "is authorized in publications and other printed matter of an official or quasi-official nature." The Army's Institute of Heraldry is the keeper of the emblem. If you want to put it on a T-shirt or bumper sticker, you first have to get permission from Stanley Haas at the Institute.
Haas says to his knowledge, Holman was never granted permission to put the Army's emblem on The Soldier's Bible. But he also doesn't keep a list or database of people who've been given permission.
Haas says people simply write in to request permission and he writes back, telling them yes or no. He says that normally, permission would not be granted for anything religious.
But Ricky King, product development manager with Holman, says the company has written permission on file from each branch of the service.
When asked how the Army enforces its rules on use of the emblem, Haas said he doesn't have the staff to go around the country looking for violators. So, he said, the rules are "almost unenforceable."
Army Chief of Chaplains David Hicks says he's perplexed how anyone would conclude this is the Army's official Bible. The front of the book states that Holman is the publisher.
Still, Barry Lynn of Americans United for Separation of Church and State says the military should enforce its own rules and require Holman to remove the emblem from its Bibles.
"If they haven't even sent a letter suggesting that these be removed, then one thinks that perhaps the military is just winking at this and is not planning to do anything about it," Lynn said.
Chaplain Hicks says it would be a shame if military emblems have to be removed from The Soldier's Bible: "It just brings us together as a group of people and gives us an opportunity to identify with our Army as a band of soldiers and believers."

If we ever get a Jewish President should it then be allowed that some Jewish religeous organization can place the Seal Of the United States government on a Bible intended for soldiers (WHO can be from ANY RELIGEON) to have in the first page of the Bible that "If you are not a convert to the Jewish faith you will burn in hell " Unless you are an immature child, you will understand that a soldier thats possibly going to war and that can be from any background would not need to see, what should be of "generic" religeous text.

As for only being two religions, you are flat out wrong. Hinduism has a following, even if its not in your neighborhood. I live in Nebraska, about 10 miles from a Hindu temple. When I was in school, I used to talk to friends about my "religious beliefs" and the only thing it brought me was physical attack because other students didn't like what I had to say. Bring ID into schools who have a religion who's creation story consists of far different ideas then another religion would result in the same thing.
Religiouse discussions should be left to a class on comparitive religion or phylosophy, but even in the philosophy class at my college, there has been physical fights between students. One such incident being a male christian student who attacked a female Seik(sp.) for disagreeing with him.

I have an evangelical church 2 doors away from me and they have a nice deal where they allow the kids to use their facilities and play in a safe environment. Since the neighborhood is mixed with a lot of Arab moslems there are a few of the children that go there. I cannot understand why in the world they would choose to hand a child that not of an age to make decisions on his own , a Christian Bible. You would figure , Oh, they are being Christian-like and giving the kids a place to play and have fun, but they have to turn it into a damn conversion process. My son is almost 18 and he goes there and he's been pretty much converted. I don't get in his way, but if you ask me, just like this ID stuff its very subversive to do things in such a manner without regard to parents religeous beliefs or upbringing to entice a child in such a way.

ZING!
This is the point I was making. The people who believed in these "gods" at the time didn't see them as false / fictional dieties. They were gods. We easily dismiss them as mythological beings now, simply because we don't believe in them and because we know them to be false. What's the difference between the Greek gods and the christian concept of god? I'm thinking that one day, people will think of "god" as mythological being that people believed in many years ago. I only wish I live to see that day (obviously won't happen in our lifetimes though).
God is a very human concept. Read some of the old testament, his character was very human, the rage, the hate, the wrath. God supported the stoning of women who had sex out of wedlock? Or of the women who grabbed her husbands penis when trying to intervene in a fight (wha?!) I mean c'mon - if you're a christian yourself, carefully think about why you believe in what you do. Were you brought up with it from being very young? Was it in school or were you made to attend church every sunday? It was pretty much a normal part of your life I would imagine (or at least would be for the majority), so you know no different. If you were brought up in a jewish background with a jewish familiy, you would follow that faith and I'd say the same if you were brought up by muslims in a muslim family and culture.
ID might not be to do with religion directly, if they claim the universe and everything in it has come about from some kind of intelligent design, then is that only ONE desiner? Only one god? Will that be multiple gods? Better yet, ask yourself this, if we have been created (because obviously, something as sophisticated and complicated as the human race, or any creature and our ecosystem, MUST have been created by something), then surely you believe our creator to be more complex and sophisticated - well continue and extend that logic all the way. Who created the creator? Surely, a being more complex than ourselves couldn't just exist!?! It/(s)he must have been created by something. It's a never ending paradox.
Or you could just take the "faith" pill and just happily go about your life thinking that god is eternal (explain plskthxbai) and that it/(s)he exists outside the confines of our time and space, yet somehow can interfere in ours. Yay.
[edit]
Pieman, it's too true. There's always going to be that agenda with them. It's not about giving the kids somewhere to play, it's about conversion. Like the teams who go to third world countries, trying to convert those they give food and medicine to. It disgusts me in so many ways.
