Are they out to get me now ?

Post by mountainman »

Do you ever get those calls from your local Sheriff, Police, Highway Patrol during fundraisers? I just got one from the local Sheriff's department looking for a donation for the local DARE program.

Do you ever think that if you say "no", they'll put you on some sort of list that will get you pulled over for a tire that has low PSI or perhaps you were going 1mph over the limit? I always think there is some secret list that the non-donators are on and they are just waiting to strike.

I said "no".

lol, I thought the same thing the year I told the FHP I would donate $10 and they sent me the sticker and I never paid. I felt pressured about saying "no" and so I just told the guy "sure, send me the $10 sticker." I didn't feel right about it, so I never put the sticker on my car, but man, I totally thought I was on some sort of list. My wife and I would joke about it all the time.

A year or so later I put a $10 donation in a jar for a sheriff's fund in order to cleanse my karma just in case. To this day, I'm yet to get any sort of ticket or criminal charge brought against me, although I always do my best to stay out of trouble and avoid those situations to begin with. :)

Yeah, I get these calls every year. Always no!

It turns out that the guy is a pitchman who pays $10K for the rights and gets to keep what he raises.

Well, Tom, this guy is actually the Deputy that DOES the local DARE program. I know of him and such, so I know it's all going to the program.

Jack_As...good for you and good luck in life.

Most of these are telemarketing companies that give between 8-10% of proceeds to the law enforcement division they are calling you for. There is no list, it's a cold call from a phone book. I once did these ttypes of calls for about two days. Never again.

Like Kold said..normally if I say yes, I don't give money right over the phone, they send me the information to send in a check.

Oh yes...I am on the list, I donated money one time and ever since, I get calls from FOP..whatever that organization is...and when I tell them no, they say they will call back at a later time.. :irate: always at dinner time., I pay my taxes, for the city police, the county sheriff and state taxes for the highway patrol..I actually asked one time if I could take the donation off my local taxes and the idiot replied yes!!..!LOL ..I am not a tax accountant but I know better then that!!..once on the list always on the list...

That's what they did in the Flintstone era :p Now they use predictive dialers, which rolls from one number to the next so that they can even get unlisted numbers. The computer dials all the numbers in order, and as soon as the phone stops ringing and hears a voice, it rolls it over to next available operator.

You can even add the do not call list to some of them, and some states even allow a percentage of the do not list to be dialed by "accident" before they impose any fines.
