Is this possible?

Post by timcsherrill »

When Comcast bumped the speeds up this past week I went from 3k dl to 4k dl and almost get it. My father had the 4k dl that was bumped up to 6k dl and after I went and configured his sg optimizer and cablenut settings he went from about 3k to 7k dl. BUT my sister in law who lives there with them since my twin bro passed away in Oct. 2003, God Bless Him, I put the same exact settings on her laptop and can only get the 4k speed?? I am confused on this, can anyone shed some light on this subject for me?

There could be a number of issues here, possibly:

1. Spyware/malware

2. Ethernet card driver update

3. Incorrect ethernet card settings

4. Firewall (Zone Alarm or Norton will slow you down considerably)

I am not going to mess with the one I can't get above 4k, it's fine enough for my sister in law to do her browsing and email at those speeds. They are running the wireless 802.11b though. My question is how is it possible to exceed by about 1mbps over the 6mbps limit on the main pc? I ran speed test on my father's main pc and he is ripping 1mbps over the Comcast advertised speed, but his ul is about where it should be. Does Docsis 2.0 modems have a major factor in this? Maybe it's because he's only 1.5 miles from Comcast facility, but then again, the max should only be 6300/764 even if your connected directly thru comcast network, right? Whatever it is I must know, because I will do my setup the exact same because we go thru the same Comcast facility, only difference is I am about 5 miles from, compared to 1.5miles. Shoot me some thoughts on this!

timcsherrill, care to share the settings you used. I'd like to try them also. :)

Sorry Mnosteele I meant kpbs, it looks like u were thinking it was way too slow, but it is the opposite. IT'S ON A DRAGSTRIP!

I will get you the cablenut settings when I go back over there later this weekend. I tried the settings on mine to see if I could possibly get this but no go!

Her computer is probably crammed with spyware and I will dl adaware and spybot for them this weekend. My pop's pc is probably filled with garbage too since he does like some porn. HAHA

I understand this, what I am saying is my dad has the 6k now, and his speeds well exceed over the 6k mark. He is averaging 7200 to 7700 kb/s. I am asking if the Docsis 2.0 modem has something to with the extra "oomph"?

Most likely the speed test he is using is a bit inaccurate, try a large ftp download.
