Disk Management not there?

Post by jmw1137 »

This is part of a much bigger problem but my computer isn't recognizing my HD that's 250 GB (it's only seeing 127). I was on the phone with Western Digital Tech Support and they were trying to direct me to disk management but it wasn't there. She tried getting me there via two different ways and both times it wasn't showing up. Any ideas? I have partition magic 8 installed if that matters.

Thanks!

Well the first thing you need to do is find out if the system and the bios support HD's that size.

Yep, it does. I ended up getting it fixed...still can't find disk management but after messing with some stuff I got it to recognize the entire drive.

I'm assuming that you tried to use the direct approach and add the snap in from mmc console? Was it even listed?

What the hell are we working with anyways?

I guess what would help most, is which OS are you using?

If it is anything short of Windows XP SP1, then that is your problem. After you install SP1, it will recognize it.

Welcome to speedguide gruven.

I agree with your first statement and disagree with you second although patching does make a difference. Hope I'm not confusing you.

Yes, welcome to Speedguide gruven. It may sound like nit picking but I think it's actually Windows XP prior to service pack 1 (and also Windows 2000 prior to service pack 3) do not support 48-bit LBA which is necessary to support hard drives larger than 137 GB. I'm running 2k pro on my box here at home. :)
Hmm, I think the quickest way to disk management is to right click the My Computer icon and select manage, that is if disk mamagement is installed. To be honest I didn't think it was possible to not install it. Can windows really run without it? Maybe a better question is, is it just the snapin that's not installed? :)

I'm using Win XP Home. The long story is I already had the same drive installed before and had problems then with getting it to recognize all 250. I used their Data Lifeguard, installed SP2 and got it to work. The drive was defective so I just got a new one from them and the same problem happened--except what I did last time wouldn't work.

I worked with tech support for almost an hour and she couldn't get it (although she was competent and helpful--unlike some other tech support). I played around with their software a bit and got it to work on my own--although like I said, disk management still doesn't show up anywhere. It's a non-issue now...at least until I need it again! :)
