Unmountable Boot Volume

Post by Godvict »

i need help, im fixin my friends computer. When booting up to Win XP i get a error that reads "Unmountable Boot Volume", because the boot.ini file is messed up. (i think). when i boot from the XP cd and then see the Welcome to setup, i press the letter R, and i go to dos prompt where i than can type "chkdsk /p" > type "fixboot" and (hopefully) it will bot. Where i need the help is, when i press R to bot to DOS, it tells me "Type the Admin pw" beleive it or not , he doesnt know it and he doesnt have an XP cd im using mine, so what can i do to bypass it? help plz.

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do but a repair install. In the NT 4 days you used to be able to use a special linux break in disk, but it won't work in xp.

So boot the box to the cd like your going to install and when it asks you to repair keep going, It will then search the drives for any other Os's installed. It should find the one your trying to fix. Tell it to repair that installation. Now you will need the keycode so don't do it if you don't have one. When all said and done the box will have a fresh install and all the old stuff will still be intact.
