Grits...

Post by Ken »

Who eats them? Who even knows what they are? :D

Yeah, the breakfast thread got me goin'!

Anyway, being a wild eyed southern boy, I was raised on grits. My Granny would "mash" my eggs & grits up together and feed them to me before I was old enough to feed myself. ;)

A true southerner only eats grits basically 3 ways; mashed up with eggs, with stewed tomatoes on top, or with fried fish. (Only a wannabe southerner would eat grits plain... ;) )

So, do you eat them? :D

Bonus question!
Do you know what they are? :D

I enjoy grits. I have a tendancy to put a lot of butter on them when I get a chance to have them. If I go to my Aunts house she always serves them for breakfast.

Answer: ground corn

I've eaten them (with butter), but it's been a loooooong time. The impression that lingers is that they were bland. OK, but nothing great. Kind of like cream of wheat, except bigger grains. They're the default breakfast side (I think) at Waffle House. No WHs around here though.

They are definitely bland, which is why we never eat grits by themselves! :D Now, fry some eggs, sunny side up and mix them with grits and it will make a bulldog break his chain... ;) :D

Ding Ding Ding!

Ground corn indeed! Yellow corn= yellow grits...Yuck!
White corn= white grits! Where is my eggs! :D

You live TOO far north. They don't serve 'em past the Mason Dixen line here in the USA.

i think the last time i had hominy grits was 20 years ago. mom made great fried grits (like a potato pancake). usually had 'em with eggs and bacon or sausage.... sort of a potato/hash browns alternate.
