Ideas for new system

Post by shadrach »

I haven't built a new box since last year, so I'm out of the loop on the latest favorite hardware around here.

A friend wants me to spec out a computer for him:
- Around $600, only needs case and system, no monitor or accessories.
- Probably wants a P4 system, although I could sell him on an Athlon if I need to.
- May want to do a little gaming, and is interested in a DVDR.

I'm thinking a nice, budget line Antec case, Asus P4 mobo, 800FSB P4, an ATI card, etc...

Anyone got any ideas?
Intel P4 2.8 800FSB / Asus P4P800SE / Corsair 1024MB PC3200 / Antec Sonata / TruePower 380w
Asus GeForce4 Ti4200 / Seagate 200GB SATA / WD 200GB IDE / LiteOn 4x DVD-RW / Windows XP Pro SP2

Yeeeup.

Intel P4 2.6C...best bang for the buck, around 189 something bucks. Great HSF already included

Asus P4P800 I865
Intel 865 Springdale chipset...best chipset IMHO for the home user. $109 bucks

If he wants firewire, there's a "deluxe" version of that motherboard for about another 20 bucks.

Light gaming...so 512 megs of RAM should be enough, can get a pair from Crucial.com for about 100 bucks.

Case? You know I'd spend a hair more, and get a quality case with a quality power supply built in, Antec Sonata, 105 bucks.

15 bucks for a black bezel floppy drive, dvd-r will push you up a bit...can find some in the low 100's. Snag an ATI 9600 pro or xt for around 185 something. Perhaps an SE I guess if he really needs to stay within budget.

All your left with is the HD...get a SATA drive whatever your size to keep from going too much over budget.
