quick P2P app
quick P2P app
I can't believe I never tried to do this before, but I have a friend on a broadband connection that I want to get some digicam images from him, off his computer.
Funny thing is he's like the only one I know that doesn't have a web or ftp server or some other geek-setup like all of us in the business. And I'm not about to try to explain to him how to use FTP commands.
So the question dawned on me as to what would be a good LIGHT P2P application that will allow me to connect directly to him by name, browse his shared folder, and then download files. He's on DSL w/o any firewall, but I'm setup behing one that I'm not going to reconfigure for the purpses of this task.
I tried WinMX, but I can't connect to him by name, and Kazaa seems like a bad choice.
Any ideas?

Sure he can, but that's not the point.
Besides, SMTP was never intended to handle large files transfers, it's soo slow.

Give him the url of one of the gui ftp clients - cuteFTP, WSFTP, etc.Funny thing is he's like the only one I know that doesn't have a web or ftp server or some other geek-setup like all of us in the business. And I'm not about to try to explain to him how to use FTP commands.
Even easier - create a directory for him on your server. Then send him a link to access via web broswers ftp://username:password@yourdomainOrIP.com/hisfolder the link uses "username : (colon) password" without spaces - smilies make it difficult to read.
Drag N Drop from there.

Servers, FTP clients, and AIM are not really in response to the original question......with all these P2P apps out there I thought that something would come up....So the question dawned on me as to what would be a good LIGHT P2P application that will allow me to connect directly to him by name, browse his shared folder, and then download files.

One of the goals of all the p2p projects of which I am aware is anonymity.Servers, FTP clients, and AIM are not really in response to the original question......with all these P2P apps out there I thought that something would come up....
I suppose you could 'fool' any p2p app. Try this:
1. create a copy of an mp3 you have and call it something COMPLETELY unique - like " ggggggggggggg "
2. Have your friend search the same string
3. when he finds the file, add to 'buddy list' equiv for the client
4. Have him download and be watching
5. Add him to your 'buddy list'
Should be able to browse all supported file types whenever you're both online.

That is a link to Kazaa Lite k++ ... you can browse his files and download. Spyware free version. No ad-ware... I don't know why this would be a bad choice..... doesn't make sense.

Same thing but on Gnutella network
http://www.emule-project.net/
Emule, different source...
Nothing that a simple google cant cure.... just look him up by his user name, and download his stuff.. But make sure that if you are downloading from him.. that he shares all the files that you may want.

Asus p4p800 Deluxe Mobo - Pentium 4 3.2 @ 3.6 - Thermaltake Spark7 HSF - Geil Golden Dragon PC3200 - ATI Radeon x850 XT PE 256mb - Maxtor 120 GB 8mb cache - Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 - Altec Lansing 5.1 Sattelites w/sub - Cooler Master Cavalier 3 case
You don't even need to do the buddy thing.. you can browse anybodys shared files... assuming that they ARE sharing files.

Microsoft's NetMeeting is easy to use and very efficient . All you need to do is make sure it's
installed on both computers. Just start it, enter your name, test the sound, and it
will start up. You will then host a meeting (File>Host Meeting) and
the other person will enter your IP and press Enter. You will
handshake and then you can share desktops and do anything on them.
It is a little slow on 56k connections but Broadband is really fast,
just like you are using your own desktop.

Shadrach,
I know this is not a p2p program, but have you thought of using remote software like ultravnc? The new version has file transfer capabilities and since your friend isn't too computer savy it would be a nice program for you to help him get out of trouble eith. The setups are easy..
