IP Address Conflict
IP Address Conflict
I have 6 computers connected wirelessly and 2 wired to a Linksys WRT54G router. They were working fine for about 2 weeks, and recently about every 12 hours the internet stops working for all the computers and I cannot even access the router's setup page. I get an error message in the system tray saying "There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network." I realize what this means, but I cannot figure out why it would occur and how to stop it. If I unplug the router for about 5 secs everything resets and is fine for a time until it happens again. All computers are set to obtain their IP address automatically and running XP pro.
Is there anything I can try?
Thanks

It could be you have your port for your provider block on one of your computers. Or as I said before two computers might be useing the same Ip. No agree you should not have to reset the router. I had a simler problem a while back . I would loose the whole network. Here it was I had block off my provider. Once I straighten that out I was fine.

I block my ip address off . When it was time for my provider to renew my lease on my Ip It would not release or renew unless I reset everything. This was on the main computer wich held the orignel Ip from the provider. I don't rember wich port it was. It was . A while back.

Sounds like about the time your internet provider renews its Ip lease. I know mine our set up for every 12 hours. Just a thought. Another thing to check and make sure no two computers are useing the same Ip address. This would cause your conflict to.
He's using a router. No relation to his LAN computers IP address, and the WAN IP the router obtains from his ISP.
Couple of things I'd think about,
1) latest firmware on your router
2) are you nearby where someone else might have wireless gear?
a) if so on #2, I'd look into securing your network, disable SSID broadcast or at least change it from the default settings.
3) I'd go into assigning static IP's to each workstation, refer to a little article I wrote.

Are there any changes you made to your routers setup, from default settings?

yes, I disabled SSID broadcast, setup a wireless filter by MAC address and disable internet access to 1 of the PCs by MAC address.
one of my wired devices is a linksys wireless media adapter, which is used to play music & show pictures over the stereo. it can connect wirelessly, but since it is close to the router I used a cable so as not to slow down the wireless unnecessarily. if it were establishing a wireless & wired connection, could it cause that problem?

I don't see that being any issue....DHCP runs over both, doesn't change for either of them. It's just two ways of getting to the client.
The media adapter...I'm not familiar with that, gotta try to take a look at that tonight. Have to head out for onsites this afternoon..clean one network of that Sven virus some appears to have opened up and unleashed.

lol, sounds like that you have somthing in your network that dose'nt like to renew your ip's for your network, yes i know that, sounds funny but a router will olny hold ip's for most mac addresses for 1 hour that includes linksys routers i bet if you keep that one of those pc offline at least, you might not have that problem. the easy way is to tell your router that you will enter all ip's dynamically, but your wan ip that needs to be dhcp, that will work most of the time. if all your componets has that feature, but dont take my word for it. just keep looking for an andswer most of these guys can help better than me.
