How hard to set up website on server?

Post by super20g »

Ok, I have a server. I have a cable modem hooked up to it with a linksys router. I am running server 2003.

what all is involved if I want to run it as a web server also? like say i want my website on the server, and set it up to be mywebsite.com or what have you...

All I know is that I will have to turn on IIS6.. then dump my website in a folder or wherever, then what? if my domain is local.domain, would i totally have to redo it to be mywebsite.com or whatever?

I just want to host my own stuff vs. paying for webhosting on a remote server.

Any help is much appreciated.

It's fairly easy, yes turn on IIS, patch it up and run hfnetchk it will with security checking and free from MS download site... plus you can run a IIS tool from MS downloads as well.

Internet Information Services (IIS) Lockdown Tool 2.1

I also just check out Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer version 1.1.1 and it's very good for checking security

For your domain name you shouldn't have to change the local for external use. I use mydomain.com for free DNS and host names look into a service like that it just point to your IP. Unless your IP changes alot then use something like DYNS for dynamic DNS.
