copy a hd

i just got a new slave harddrive (mp3's, vids, prog, games...) i want to transfer everything over to the newone, is there a prog. that will do that, without having to reinstall most of my running prog. thank you.

Might want to try Software Forums.. but I beleive something in the line of Norton Ghost is what you are lookin for.

At work w have this "Clone" machine that plugs in the IDE cable to the clone machine hard drive to the other hard drive.. Clones it in about 10minutes. Then they have one that we JUST bought,but it hasnt came in yet, and it connects to the USB (like the ones in front of the cases we have) and clones it just under 5minutes, or suppose to.

Ya, it is about $1000-1500 from LogiCube, I think that is where we bought it from... good for coporation's I suppose.

Just plug the new hard drive in, boot to Windows and format/partition the drive, and copy the files over.

EDIT: You mean clone the drive or copy files? You say slave, which to me means a second hard drive for data. Please elaborate.

the hd i use now is very old, and fails on me sometimes. i want to clone the new hd with the files/prog of the old hd, i have games and prog that i dont want to reinstall.

You can use a program like Norton Ghost to clone the entire hard drive as you have it now, like was mentioned.

HOWEVER...seriously, while you may not want to do it, here's the best method IMHO.

Partition the new drive with partitions for MP3, video, etc., but leave the first partition blank and allot it 10 GB or so (more or less depending on how many games, etc.) Then hook it up as a slave and boot into Windows. Copy all your MP3, video, etc. to their respective partitions on the new drive. Then remove the old drive, set the new one as the master, and reinstall Windows, games, apps, etc. in the first partition of the new drive, which will be C:

Like, this is just an example:

C:\ OS, apps, games 20 GB
D:\ Downloads 3 GB
E:\ Personal data 5 GB
F:\ MP3 40 GB
G:\ Video 10 GB

Etc.

You may not like that idea, but I assure you it will be far less troublesome and you'll also have a fresh slate to start over with.

Some retail boxed HD's come with their own disk imaging software also, like WD or Seagate or...even..ugh...Maxtor.
