CD-RW tray opens after pc turned on

I am hoping someone may have run into this problem before.

My father'cd-rw drive tray opens as soon as the power button is turned on for the computer and will not shut.

Any ideas?

Is it shot?

Could be. Have you tried resetting it? Unplug the molex while the pc is on, and replug it. Sometimes that fixes it. If not, it's hosed.

Check the button that opens the tray, it might be stuck or pushed in.
