mines loud when it boots up but when its running full speed, u cant hear it. i heard that u can get a defective loud one. heh couple people were complaining that they could hear the hdd from another room. but my fans pretty much cover the sound up.

Anyways. i found my problem. it was my Liteon DVD drive. it seems to work with the LED on the HDD and when the lite stops on the dvd the light might stay on on the HDD . its really wierd

i had a problem with a 120gig WDSE.... wasnt for my system but one i was building...... when i booted up the comp it sounded like it was going to take off! it was extremely loud
but other than that i got 4 80 gig WDSE's in my other comps
no problems with those (knocks on wood)

They are fragile drives and if improperly handled the bearings can easily foul up.

I just bought one of the WD SE 80gbs. It is extremely quiet, silent really...and I don't have any 80000cfm l337 fans, either.
As for brand loyalty....it shouldn't exist with PC hardware. After all, IBM used to make the best drives on the market. I consider all of my PC purchases on a case by case basis.
I had tons of trouble with WDs when I was a tech back in the mid to late 90's. Like 30% of them were bad out of the box. Now they're back on top.
Bottom line: The WD SEs rule.

my wd120se is absolutely silent.
Lots of folks like maxtor but i have had to replace 2 40G drives in less than a year - god bless travan and Dells 'spare in teh air' policy

Huh...in my years in the industry...WD's built a reputation for being the most reliable drives out there.
They've never been the top performers (until the SE came out), and they used to be known for running hot....but they've always been the ones that "take a lickin'..and keep on tickin' "
