well i have a problem with high pings and slow down rates
like 100 to 250 ms pings and 40 to 70 KB/sec

i use to get like 30 to 80 ms pings and 100 to 200 KB/sec +

Post some Tracert(s) and lets see what the problem is.......

all those times are relatively good I think.
I pinged speedguide, and got the same time's all 70-80ms.

your download speed is kinda slow, but still 40kb/sec is 10 times faster than dial up, at the slowest. when did the slow speeds happen? do they happen all the time, all day, or just certain times of day?
they'res not much I can do, I'm only a Tier 1 agent.

i am on Cox@Home in Louisiana and i use to beable to get 100 to 200 KB/sec + 24/7 all the time now it got slower
i really wish they would add more nodes out here and upgrade the hardware and stuff.
Do i have to get a whole group of people to come together and call @Home all at once? or sign a paper?
i really wish i could get what i was paying for before.

i dont like that @Home like capped download to 3 Mbps because it should be at least 5 or 10 Mbps up too not 3 Mbps up too
upload is capped at 256 Kbps which is too bad but i would mine 512 or 1 Mbps upload hehe

pings u cant really fix, and @home wont add more nodes until x amount of ppl join up in one area, as fpr DL, u sure ur capped i have my upload capped but my download is wide open, my upload got cut back as far as 128k, so be happy with ur upload!

right now in games i have a terrible 300ms + pings
it is a sunday night here right now
i tired different severs and at different times of the day
this is worst than 56k or as worst with 300 ms + pings

i do have a NetGear RT 314 router with a 4 port switch which two other computers are connected too but they dont do any gaming all they do mostly is surf the web and email mostly.
so that can be effecting it thatttttttt much.

Goto a Dos window.
enter tracert http://www.speedguide.net >> imtim83.txt

It will just sit there for a few minutes, because it is doing the tracert and placing it in the file 'imtim83.txt'

Then when its done you can open the file and view your tracert


and copy it to here........

(probably should remove the first line of the results, cause I think thats your IP address, and you don't need to be posting that)

Some places you cannot tracert... cause of firewalls and such...

You should really post tracert(s) to the servers you are gaming on or websites your having problems with....

Well those are some decent tracerts, don't see ya losing any packets and they are under 80ms.

Of course its running good right now huh...

Well I had the same issue with RoadRunner at one time..

It would be perfect until 6pm-11pm, everyone comes home from
work and starts sucking up bandwidth..

The only way I fixed it was going with another provider, (only cause I moved)

RoadRunner was kick ass speed except the evening hours.

I was expecting to see 'timeouts' and 'packet loss' on your tracerts....

I hope it gets better for ya...

The router isn't slowing you down.

Its probably the servers past hop #4 or #5 , when you check tonight during the problem hours I bet you will find that alot of those servers are timing out, losing packets, etc....

why do they start to do that ?

They wouldn't fix anything with the tracerts you have above. Those are considered Good...

You are having problems Outside the @home network, when you ping something it hops around all over the US. I am sure you are timing out on the hops that @home have no control of ...

Like if you had Timed out on the first couple of Hops, Then you could Totally Demand a fix by @home, but they can't do much for ya if its servers Outside their network.....

Yep, you are hitting Qwest on the 5th hop. Qwest is outside the @Home network. Heat.net is being shut down. It was the only @Home supported gaming site. I am not surprised though...@Home is still losing money and has been since it's inception. Their stock is down in the 3's now. Also, I have posted this many times before, but, 10 ms between hops is normal. So, if you were to have 15 hops that would equal 150 ms to that server. For speed checks, go here: http://24.0.0.71/download and start the @Home 1.2 download to check speeds. @Home has no control of servers outside their network. Furthermore, upstream is VERY expensive. A lot of sites are still running on T-1's like MP3.com. There are some on dual T-1's, but, remember what that costs per month. The national average for a T-1 is $795.00 a month. T-3's are very expensive as well. The cheapest I have seen a T-3 is $12,000 a month as a reseller. Supposedly the national average is $24,000 a month for a T-3. A lot of ISP's are losing money. and not forecasted to make any money anytime soon. Will Copper Mountain be able to turn their business around? Not sure, their stock price is in the 3's as well. Qwest is making SOME money, but not exactly hand over fist at .57 cents forecasted this year.

get a new ISP lol

i can get a new isp with dsl. its Bellsouth fast acess
256Kbps upload and 1.5 Mbps download for like $40 or $50 a month

But how can this not be @Home? it could be too many people one node and i dont like that
cause my pings are just fine at other times by during the night mostly.

This is a horrible slow down.

Download rates on there network on http://24.0.0.71/download
when i download the 1.2 software to test my download rates i only get 58 to 65 KB/sec

just tested at 11:22 pm at night

hopefully i can help out my friendly cajun neighbor with your problems

first sorry to piss on your parade, but i would say the postings you have shown are FAR FROM HORRIBLE, but that does not mean they are GREAT either

first you are adressing two separate and not necessarlly related problems

high pings can cause slow downloads , but slow downloads does not always come from high pings

a ping measures the latency ... ie how long it takes to reach its destination you could have high pings , but still have high downloads

if you compare your connection to a water pipe and you say i have a soda straw and a 12" pipe and you are going to fill 2 pits the same size

the soda straw is 100 feet long and the 12" pipe is 500 feet long
you open the valve on each and the water from the straw reaches the end first and the pit fills VERY slowly, but as soon as the water from the 12" pipe reaches the pit the pit fills fast and a long time before the pit the straw is filled

filling the pit would be compared to your DOWNLOAD ... ie filling your machine with info

a fatter pipe ..ie cable will fill your machine faster even if the latiency ... ie ping is a little higher

with that said high pings can cause slow downloads , but i think they would need to be much higher (2x-3x) than the ones you posted to really slow your download to the speeds you post

also a ping to speedguide is not really a good test
as earlier posted the ONLY PLACE YOUR ISP WILL GUARANTEE PERFORMANCE IS ON THEIR NETWORK ... with that said a 60-70 ping to speedguide is pretty damn good

you also need to plug your computer DIRECTLY INTO THE MODEM TO RUN ANYTYPE OF REAL TEST not through a hub or router ...argue all you want, but couldn't your router develope a problem just like your MODEM/CABLE LINE/COMPUTER/@HOME NETWORK could as well...if you really want to find the problem you would try the machine directly into the modem maybe even more then one and see what the results are .. if you argue this point i don't think you really want to get the problem solved

the #3-5 post of your trace route on page #2 are kickass and if you do not like those then you will never be satisfied


now to where you do have problems

post #7 on the third page again is FAR from horrible, but does indicate a slow donw at the #4 hop just so you know this is well off your node and has nothing to do with a crowed node this is almost surely your gateway, but could just be another router in the @Home network... also this particular router might not be the problem another router up from it might be over loaded and backing up the others... these trace routes are on the cusp of what i would say is not acceptable... now for the bad news their is absolutely NOTHING that tech support that you get on the phone can do to solve a problem that is out on the network A TRUCK ROLL WILL BE A WASTE OF YOUR TIME AS WELL AS THE TECH's

you should break down your network plug directly into the modem and get some more results if the hops ON THE @Home NETWORK are 150+ you might be able to call in email the results in and they might escalate a ticket to the NOC to look at the routing in your area... if their is a problem then i can guarantee they are already well aware of it and WILL implement a solution, but the bad news is THIS WILL TAKE TIME probably on the order of 2-3 months... WHY you might ask well think about how long it takes to dig a ditch from say new orleans to dallas and lay fibre in it and get it lit up...this will not happen over night


now to where i see you have a real problem that @Home should need to resolve quickly and that is your last post with the download of the ATHM software (do not install it just down load it for all of you out there ) @Home likes you to get atleast 70KB download on their network

i am surprised that no one ask have you tweeked your system with the patches in here?? also you might use the windows default patch test the download, then install a new speed patch and see if there is a differance, you need to do this when directly into the modem not through the router...

if there is no change then are you using : a firewall/aOL/virus software or any of those crappy download managers???? if so then uninstall ALL of them and try again

try several of your computers directly into the modem directly are they all downloading under 70KB ON THE @HOME NETWORK??
if so then you have a problem they need to solve

call into support have them CLOSE ANY PENDING ITEMS AND REPUSH YOUR MODEM.. then wait the 1-1/2 hours for this to go through and see if their is a change

if not then remove and reinstall the client for MS networks and the tcp/ip for your nic ..as well as remove any ipx/spx , netbeui, vpn , or aol adapters that you have in there and do not use

are you on a nic or a usb?? either way you might try to reinstall the drivers .. if on a usb i would try a nic i think the usb sux , but hey that is me

if none of the above fixes the download then you need to call support and go through their steps if they do not get the d/l over 70KB on their network after following all the steps they ask then you might be able to get a tech out

if you do get a tech and he comes out he will probably first plug in a laptop and see what he downloads if he is kickin ass then he will tell you to reformatt and reinstall... you might not like that, but this forum is full of peolpe that had several truck rolls to the point they would no longer send one out...they FINALLY LISTENED AND REFORMATTED and BOOM problem solved

hey dude i dont want to sound like a **** here , but your post about HORRIBLE are a BIT dramatic....right or wrong if you call support with a big oh this is TRERRIBLE dramatic attitude you will get NOWHERE....again right or wrong

if you are really from louisiana and a coon ass then i KNOW you got manners and you know the saying you get more flies with honey than vinegar

if you call in to support and are educated to what you are asking for and are COOL and work WITH the tech like ALL the people from LOUISIANA that i have worked with are then your problem will get solved

to sum it up i think it will take time to get the pings down

@Home or any isp can only guarantee speeds on their network

@Home does not really guarantee ping times / yours are not great, but should not keep your download that low as you get

they WILL guarantee the 70KB on their network, but if the tech comes out and gets better then you need to look at YOUR machine

damn that is bad buddy. your at COX@HOME, so I dont think I can help you, as I deal with the ATT@HOME accounts. but get a copy of all of the traceroutes, and call up a tech, tell them exatly what you see. ALL your pings are above 200ms, that's pretty bad, anything above 100ms I'm told, is a problem, and needs to be fixed, so hopefully if you call, the techs will do what they can for you. You'll probably need the Tier 2 support, if COX@home is anything like how we handle the calls.
tell them it happens every day, or however many times it does happen, but that's definetely not good.


On a side note, if anyone out there is truly unhappy with @home, cancel your accounts. according to ATT, the $6 dollar hike to $45.95/ month, is based on "ATT @home's performance and reliabllity, and is still cheaper than competing cable and DSL services" basically, corporate bullcrap. if you want ATT to take notice, after they drop from 4 million customers to 2 million, they'll figure out something. until they, if your paying, why would they change? its all about business.

i did call them but they said they couldnt do anything. which was Tier 1 . They said if u call enough they may do something or get enough people to complain all together.

and this problem only mainly happens at night
