COLUMBIA, S.C. -- In a Victoria's Secret store, surrounded by frilly bras and blown-up images of barely covered models, Lori Rueger says she was told to find somewhere else to breast feed.

Rueger's story -- told during a hearing in support of a state bill to ensure breast feeding is allowed in public places -- so angered a state lawmaker that he's urging women to form a national Mothers Against Victoria's Secret movement.


"It's really kind of subhuman behavior. And subhuman behavior warrants some kind of strong response other than just a little law that we pass in South Carolina," Rep. Walt McLeod, D-Little Mountain, said Wednesday.

Rueger was one of more than a couple of dozen mothers, doctors, lawyers and other breast-feeding advocates who were on hand to urge passage of the bill.

The 29-year-old Charleston mother testified that she was in a Victoria's Secret store in suburban Mount Pleasant and was told by an employee that she could not breast feed her baby in a dressing room and was encouraged to use a restroom in a nearby store instead.

A Victoria's Secret spokesman described what happened with Rueger as a misunderstanding and said it has actually had a positive effect by reopening a dialogue on the issue.

Victoria's Secret has a "long-standing policy to allow nursing in our stores. We are still for and about women," said Anthony Hebron, spokesman for the chain's parent, Limited Brands.

The breast-feeding bill may face a tough time in the House Judiciary Committee next week from Rep. John Graham Altman, R-Charleston, who says he supports the concept, but not the mandate on businesses.

I would personally prefer not to bear witness to others' breastfeeding. Besides making me jealous I just would rather not participate in others' expelling bodily juices.

Why don't we just start putting free-standing urinals in stores? Both breastfeeding and pissing are natural, bodily functions(?)

And where are the morals? Exposing children to thongs at such an early age!

I have no problem with people breast feeding, but private businesses should be able to limit what happens on their property even if you don't agree with their decisions.

See....now it was in a dressing room not amongst the garter beltls etc... A dressing room would be a semi private lcoation.

In this case, I agree (the thong bit was a throwback to Bouncers post on violence vs boobies.

That law that was mentioned would require breastfeeding to be allowed anywhere and everywhere - that's a little extreme. If I run a business, I want to be able to dictate appropriate behaviour or ask people to leave my store...

Same thing happened my wife in Sears. She was told by another woman (electronics dept mangr. in Bakersfield, Ca) she had to nurse in the restroom.

Now my wife does cover herself with a blanket, but even if she didn't telling someone they cannot nurse their child is way out of line. The fact that it was a woman made it even more bizarre, although she was ghetto famulous. If you don't like what you see then don't look!

Needless to say when I got done with the Sears store manager I walked out the door with a $100 dollar gift certificate.

In this case, I see it as totally different than the public swimming pool thread.

She was in the dressing room, behind whatever form of doors or curtain they have...so we can assume she was in privacy...not in the face of other people.

Perhaps there's more to the story then we are seeing.....staff suspected her of shoplifting...but no visual proof, etc.

Did so on a regular basis

it's a private store, they can do what they want

voice your dislike by not shopping there if you so strongly disagree with them

Devils advocate...by that logic, I should be able to walk around pleasuring myself in public places - hand down my pants, as it were. If you don't like it, don't look, right?

Apples and oranges homie. Pleasuring yourself and nourishing an infant are two completely separate things.

not COMPLETELY different. Both are very natural and are related to the cycle of life.

I agree it is extreme example, but on some level, the two are the same.

why not just go into the bathroom? There really isnt any reason that i can see that its necessary to do it in public.

Meggie...maybe not now, but when you have a kid and if you decide to breastfeed, you may think differently when its time to take care of your child. When that baby starts screaming that it wants to eat...your motherly instincts will kick in and say "screw this..Im feedin my baby and not in some dirty disgusting bathroom where people pee and defocate"

Seriously tho - why not get a milking machine and fill a few bottle before going out? As I posted before, sharing your bodily functions in public is a little rude.

Ya, my sis did that for both my nieces. She didn't like the idea of nursing in public either.

We did that, but that doesn't cover you 100% of the time. Wifey can only produce so much milk. Nothing rude about nursing your child.

The machine is not so good for the womans breasts..it can cause problems and then the baby won't be able to feed.

As I have posted before, there are times this is not an option. Some babies cannot switch between breast and bottle, and vice versa.

I nursed in public several times, no one ever saw my breast. Some people get just as weirded out by seeing a blanket draped over a shoulder. It is not an issue of nudity.

I wonder if the two threads shouldn't be combined....

use a blanket to cover it up at least. I was walking into a grocery store down here and someone was breast feeding their baby while walking down the sidewalk. the kid was finished apparently and the women seemed to be in no hurry to cover up....WTF!!
