only read the first page of the post but this came to my mind...
This is complete and utter BS... I just forwarded this story to my private email at home from work so i can email it to my uncle in texas who was a marine and has lost quite a few friends im sure.. I have a few relatives over there right now fighting for that contries freedom, but so help me if they die and then get shipped back here as Freight just like a common FedEx package... this admistration will NEVER hear the end of it. it is complete DISREPECT to every person fighting or that has faught for this country..

Hell, let me break out my gun and start shooting at you, and give you a few "close" calls, see how fast you change your mind.
People like you make me ill.. you know that..
the common man can get a damn nice funeral, a construction worker can commonly get a REALLY REALLY nice funeral if they got killed on the job..
You really need to understand that our troop are doing a job that currently you have to volunteer for and want to do.. that takes BALLS... BIG SHINY STEEL BALLS THE SIZE OF TEXAS! I know I couldn't do it. I was about to sign up for the marines and I would be over there right now if i did.. but I didn't.. so I repect and damn near worship every soldier that goes over there to keep me safe at night.. why? well, hell I'm glad to be speaking english right now, becuase of soldiers like my great grandfather I am.. else we would be speaking german or Japanese..

I'd just be happy that im able to get the body. In WWII, etc. there were ALOT of moms who never got their son back. Its not an insult to bring a body back like that I mean come on, I sure wouldnt care if I got killed over there if they shipped me that way. I'm thinking its due to resources.

like i said, its part of your right as a soldier. you know that although you may die for your country.. at least your body will be taken care of and treated with military honors.
This isnt WWII.. theres no reason for that.

Ive had people treat me pretty ****ty because I wear this uniform, people i dont even know on the street saying bad stuff to me. My life has been a rollarcoaster these past few months with getting ready for deployment then, having the mission canceled, then having most of my friends leave to go with an infantry unit that i cant go with because im female. Im going to have to say goodbye to the majority of my friends in a couple weeks.. say goodbye so they can go over there and get shot at, live in less then ideal conditions and be hated by the locals and maybe come back in one of those coffins.
I realize that you have family in the military.. Im sorry but that does not give you an acurate picture of what its truley like to be a soldier or a marine or anything else. When you are sitting in a muddy hole, shivering, while rain pours down on you.. for hours.. while you are exhausted and hungry and miserable... thats when you can say that you know what its like. When you have given up all your comforts, everything you love and put it on hold when you are told to, when you can be sent away halfway across the world for a year or more, whenever they want, when you cant make a life at home because everything is seen as temporary, then you will know what its like. Otherwise, regardless of who your family is, your just another civilian.
going back to the glorified part... a soldier is willing to give everything, even their life for this country. Accidents happen in every job, but getting maliciously hunted by your enemy is something thats pretty unique to military. As military one of the benefits that I get for willing to live and die for my country is that i get to have a military funeral. Think about that for a second. Im willing to be miserable and possibly cut my life short so that when im dead.. "rotting" as you so nicely put it, that they will show me the recognition for my sacrafice and throw a flag over my coffin and treat it with respect worthy of someone who died prematurely simply for fighting for their country. Glorified?
Personally i think the military, police, EMTs, and firefighters should be treated like the NBA is. All these occupations require you to put the lives of other people above your own when its called for, yet if you look into it, all of these jobs get crap for wages. We obviously arent doing it for the money. And unlike the other occupations i listed, the military doesnt have a Union. Theres nothing that says that we cant go all night with no sleep, nothing that says that we deserve coffee breaks or weekends off and Im not saying there should be. If we fight the good fight and dont get the heavy paycheck that we deserve, is it really that awful to show common respect even admiration for soldiers?
Glorification? Maybe you need to step into a pair of combat boots for a few days.. i think your opinion would change pretty fast.

Bla bla bla, you missed the whole point. The is they are GETTING them BACK so you can have a proper funeral. So all this fuss about them being on a air plane is nonesense. What else do you expect them to come on? I think sending them on the plane is good and gets their bodies back fast.
Also I never said I dont respect them you

But there is no reason not to give them the respect they have earned. It's like we have to choose, bring them back or get them a flag.

We should be used to this by now. Its a typical "Do as I say , not as I do attitude". Support the troops or you are being unpatriotic, but its fine for us to send the bodies home in a wooden box without a patriotic arrival.

Maybe I misread read something, but are they just throwing the bodies in boxes on the plane?

No.
The Bodies arrive via military transport plane at whatever AFB, covered in the flag honor guard all that. Then unless requested otherwise by the family they are shipped via whatever comercial carrier back to the families. The families can request the full military honors for the funeral if they wish. IE the honor guard the whole nine yards. That's what the article was about. That other families may not be aware of the process to go about requesting this, or that it's even available.

Soldiers die in war, it sucks, like people dying of cancer, that sucks too, and if you want to hear my conspiracy theory about this thread, you'll have to wait another 4 beers.

BTW, the DoD puts out a daily summary of American casualty counts.
http://www.defenselink.mil/news/casualty.pdf
Lets try and dial the rhetoric back a tad. While an Administration might wish to "lessen" American KIA numbers, the Pentagon is very likely to flat refuse to do so. They take their responsibilities in this extremely seriously.
As to the original story, a uniformed escort is supposed to go with the body from the place where they were killed all the way until they reach home, preferrably either someone from the soldiers unit, or a person from the same hometown. This is precisely to make sure the casket isn't lost, or damaged in the civilian transport system and to make sure the body is treated appropriately at every step in the journey. There is no problem with the caskets travelling in the hold of the commercial aircraft. They are kept seperate from any luggage or parcel containers and they are treated gently by the ground staff and handled in a seperate, special way. We simply do not have the C-130's plus crews to expend on transporting bodies when they have other missions to accomplish. However, the military takes their responsibility in this matter seriously.
The following link takes you to the real story of one such journey.
