well.. I got it... and the switch was not the ticket. I had to use a my old Linksys router.

I went to the Linksys set up page and turned off the wireless and changed the IP address so it was not matching the Verizon one. the release and renewed the IP address. and it worked..

I took my laptop up to the room and pluged it in.. and nothing also.. Is it because the switch is after the router in the other room? I'm getting pissed off.. I need to get this cleared up and i'm running out of ideas. It picks up a IP address but will not connect to the net.

Verizon's Modem has a built in Router.. So you have to use it. So i guess it looks like this.

Modem >>>> Router >>>> Switch >>>> PC

Have you tried it? Most of the time for a simple setup it will work, but sometimes there are still issues. It is a starting point, and a pretty good/simple one too.

I am also kind of new to this. If all your computers are hooked up physically then what is the point of having a wirless router or an access point for that matter. I am just trying to learn as well, so any input on why you would need it would be great..

Yes all of the desktops are hard wired but ...

You need to setup Microsoft Networking...either peer to peer..or if you have a server with active directory...set that up.

Routers will separate networks with their NAT....that's why daisy chaining routers it usually not desired.

Do you have or can point me to a how to guide or step by step ...

Yes.....on most routers...there is a built in switch. Such as in the BEFSR81..you have a built in 8 port switch. A basic switch allows PCs connected to it to be networked.

One note though..I see you have a wireless router in your sketch..you want to add a wireless access point..not another ...
