Microsoft is planning to unveil its Windows 8 successor next month at a special press event. The company will release a Windows 9 preview, or beta, for software developers on Sept. 30, according to a report of The Verge.
It's not yet clear whether Windows 9 will actually be known as Windows 9. The operating system is currently code-named Windows Threshold, though it's highly likely that Microsoft will keep its numbering scheme with the next platform.
Windows 9 will revamp Windows to address some key usability criticisms of Windows 8/8.1. For starters, it's bringing back the Start menu (which was "blown out" into the Start screen with Windows 8) and enhancing it with some elements of the "modern" UI. Also, modern Windows apps will be able to run within a window on the Desktop.
All of these tweaks will make Windows 9 more mouse-and-keyboard friendly. The original implementation of Windows 8 had been an attempt to make one OS that was equally useable on both touchscreen devices and traditional computers.
