Samsung 60GHz Wi-Fi to reach speeds of up to 4.6Gbps

60GHz accelerates Wi-Fi data transmission five times

Samsung Electronics Co. said it has developed a 60 GHz WiFi technology that provides speed that is more than 10 times faster than that of 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi technologies.

Samsung's 802.11ad standard bridges the gap between theoretical and actual speeds by reducing co-channel interference, regardless of the number of devices connected to a network. Thanks to the improved antenna technology, the signals travel further and are less likely to get lost while travelling. All these enhancements allow to be achieved data rate of 575MBps (4.6Gbps). This means that a 1 gigabyte movie will be transferred between devices in less than three seconds.

"Samsung has successfully overcome the barriers to the commercialization of 60GHz millimeter-wave band Wi-Fi technology, and looks forward to commercializing this breakthrough technology," said Kim Chang Yong, Head of DMC R&D Center of Samsung Electronics. "New and innovative changes await Samsung's next-generation devices, while new possibilities have been opened up for the future development of Wi-Fi technology."

Samsung intends to implement the new 60 GHz WiFi technology in a wide range of products, including audio-visual and medical devices, and telecommunication equipment. Probably the first devices that will support the new technology will appear as early as next year.
