India to surpass US in internet user base

A recent report from India has shown that the country will soon overtake the U.S. in terms of Internet users. Now, the US has the second-largest Internet population in the world, following China which has more than 600 million users.

By December this year, it is expected that India will take this second place with about 400 million users.That's a 49 percent increase since 2014, according to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and market research group IMRB.

"While Internet in India took more than a decade to move from 10 million to 100 million and 3 years from 100 to 200 million, it took only a year to move from 300 to 400 million users," the report said.

This increase is a result of growing mobile phone usage in the country. Currently, 87 percent of the country's Internet users go online through a mobile devices. According to the report, most users access the Internet for online communication, social networking, and entertainment. Only 24 per cent of urban users and 5 per cent of rural users accessed the Internet for online shopping.
