Amazon's Rekognition software can now detect fear

Amazon has announced that its facial recognition system can now detect "fear" by reading a person's face. Rekognition is one of many Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud services available for developers. It can be used for facial analysis or sentiment analysis, which identifies different expressions and predicts emotions from images of people's faces. The service uses artificial intelligence to "learn" from the reams of data it processes.

Civil rights groups called on the tech giant to stop selling Rekognition to law enforcement, but Amazon's investors voted against a proposal to limit the practice. The company also reportedly offered Rekognition to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is perhaps one of the most controversial agencies today.

Amazon is one of many facial recognition vendors, alongside France's Idemia, Japan's NEC and Microsoft. In May, Amazon shareholders rejected proposals to curb and audit its facial recognition technology, particularly in offering it to governments unless the company's board determined that such sales did not violate civil liberties.
